The Huntsville Lions Club is celebrating 75 years serving within our community this November! We are honoured to have had hundreds of true \u201cVolunteers\u201d over these 75 years, donating thousands of hours helping those that need assistance within our community. Lions is both the oldest and largest truly \u201cvolunteer\u201d organization in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

To define the term \u201cVolunteer\u201d, is someone who offers both their time and talents to the assistance of others without material benefit. Lion members recognize that we have all needed assistance at different times in our lives. Lions have fun events to raise funds that directly support the people and help charitable organizations within their communities. And they do it quietly, without any \u201cfan fair\u201d! Lions’ activities continue to make huge differences in countless lives, food banks, Hospice, Hospitals, the elderly, the blind, the deaf etc. within communities globally.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, in my opinion, \u201cvolunteer\u201d organizations are being hurt by individuals and groups that call themselves \u201cnot for profit\u201d just because it sounds good but use that status to actually be more profitable. For decades and without incident, the Huntsville Lions has been entrusted with the management and care of Chaffey Hall, keeping it safe and available for fundraising activities, the use of Girl Guides, Brownies, Lioness and other like-minded groups or individuals. Over the decades hundreds of family functions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, baby showers, engagement parties, stags etc. have been successfully held in Chaffey Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

A responsibility Lions addressed very seriously and for many reasons foremost is the protection of the Town’s assets entrusted to Lions and secondly, the reputation of Lionism and the purpose of Chaffey Hall. The Huntsville Lions is a registered \u201cNot for Profit\u201d club and offers the hall and its facilities at reduced rates. We do this to keep the costs down to help ensure the success of an individual event. <\/span><\/p>\n

Approximately three years ago, at the request of the Huntsville Theatre Group (HTG), we offered a \u2018dream’ rental agreement to help them get started. Since then, we have learned that some members of that group are benefiting financially for their efforts which was not the stated purpose and undermines the Lions’ very generous arrangement. We were also informed by the HTG executive that the theatre group was operating in ‘THE RED’. This caused great concern to the Lions Club as managers of Chaffey Hall and was not what was agreed to both in spirit or on paper. We were initially told that the theatre group was ‘not for profit’, however, we have learned differently. We also discovered that the theatre group was sub-letting the some of their space in violation of our agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the proverbial child was caught with their hand in the cookie jar, the Lions executive met with the administration of the HTG to address this and other tenancy violations. As the Lions’ President, it was imperative to me that we made sure that the generosity of the Lions was not being abused, that entrusted assets were protected and ensure that the tenant had the ability to keep its commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, and very undeserved and unfortunate, the Huntsville Lions Club and some of its members have endured many defaming fabricated stories being posted in social media. Unfortunately it is very easy for individuals to use social media to malign others with fabrications. I expect we will receive more.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel embarrassed by HTG’s unjustified complaints and their attempts to harm the reputation of Huntsville Lions. The fact is, there would not be a HTG without the Huntsville Lions\u2019 support. Since 1941, when the Lions Club was formed, no one can remember a complaint ever being brought before the Town Council regarding the Lions. It is unfortunate that because of HTG’s unjustified complaints of the Huntsville Lions and the inappropriate unauthorized activities of some councillors in intervening, in direct conflict with our long standing contract to manage Chaffey Hall, that they have unwittingly opened doors for litigation. There is absolutely no truth to all the negative comments that have been made regarding the Huntsville Lions Club, or its members, on any media.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Huntsville Lions are proud to have served the members of our community for 75 years and we look forward to another 75 years. History does repeat itself and the Lions volunteers will be there. Our motto is, WE SERVE.<\/span><\/p>\n

Final word ~ <\/i><\/span>Those who regularly volunteer, they know about the blessing received when you offer assistance to a person or individual. That is why we volunteer, to treat others as we would like to be treated. Tough times remain and even in our own community approximately 1000 families are regularly utilizing the food bank.
