{"id":22502,"date":"2016-11-01T08:25:04","date_gmt":"2016-11-01T12:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=22502"},"modified":"2016-11-01T08:29:11","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T12:29:11","slug":"beat-silent-killer-prevent-co-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/beat-silent-killer-prevent-co-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Beat the silent killer: prevent CO in your home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario\u2019s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs from November 1-7, and the Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers remind you to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) in your home by getting all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn Ontario, more than 80 per cent of injuries and deaths from CO occur in the home,\u201d said Muskoka Lakes Fire Chief Richard Hayes. \u201cWe want to make sure everyone is safe from CO. Get all fuelburning appliances inspected by a registered contractor.\u201d Visit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cosafety.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">COSafety.ca<\/a><\/span> to find a registered contractor near you.<\/p>\n<p>Muskoka Fire Prevention also reminds you to install CO alarms in your home if you have a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. Fuel-burning appliances can include furnaces, hot water heaters, gas or wood fireplaces, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators, barbeques, stoves and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must have a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage,\u201d said Chief Hayes. \u201cFor added protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every storey of the home according to manufacturer\u2019s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you live in a condo or apartment building with a service room, CO alarms must be installed in the service room and adjacent to each sleeping area of all homes above, below and beside the service room. In condo or apartment buildings that have a garage, CO alarms must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area of all homes above, below and beside the garage.<\/p>\n<h6>What is CO?<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>CO is known as the silent killer because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that can be deadly.<\/li>\n<li>CO is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely in fuel-burning appliances and devices such as furnaces, gas or wood fireplaces, hot water heaters, stoves, barbeques, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators and vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Prevent CO in your home:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents are cleaned and inspected annually. Visit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cosafety.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">COSafety.ca<\/a><\/span> to find a registered contractor near you.<\/li>\n<li>Check that all outside appliance vents are not blocked.<\/li>\n<li>Gas and charcoal barbeques should only be used outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Never use barbeques inside garages, even if the garage doors are open.<\/li>\n<li>Portable fuel-burning generators should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from windows, doors, vents and other building openings.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure all portable fuel-burning heaters are vented properly, according to manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.<\/li>\n<li>Open the flue before using a fireplace for adequate ventilation.<\/li>\n<li>Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor inside a garage, even if the garage doors are open. Always remove a vehicle from the garage immediately after starting it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Know the symptoms of CO:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, as well as confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness and death.<\/li>\n<li>If your CO alarm sounds, and you or other occupants suffer from symptoms of CO poisoning, get everyone out of the home immediately. Then call 9-1-1 or your local emergency services number from outside the building.<\/li>\n<li>If your CO alarm sounds, and no one is suffering from symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery needs replacing, or the alarm has reached its &#8220;end-of-life&#8221; before calling 9-1-1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Know the sound of your CO alarm:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Your CO alarm sounds different than your smoke alarm. Test both alarms monthly and make sure everyone in your home knows the difference between the two alarm sounds.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be confused by the sound of your CO alarm\u2019s low-battery warning.
