The creative spark that ignites most artists\u2019 lives begins to manifest at quite an early age. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mason Rozanski began taking writing seriously in 2025, during his sophomore year at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School. Now a junior, he has published one article of local interest and one short story in the magazine \u2018Almaguin Highlands,\u2019 and has made steady progress on a novel he hopes to complete by 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by an elaborate dream, from which a main character surfaced through his subconscious, Mason began jotting notes and character studies, based on the formidable impressions left in his memory. Two other characters also emerged, not so much as vivid portraitures, but more in the scope of their roles and specifically, their personality traits and how they might handle themselves in unforeseeable circumstances. Subsequently, his recollections, after a period of trial and error, began to shape into a broader narrative \u2013 an expansive intergalactic tale filled with intrigue and conflict, which Mason credits to the turmoil, upheaval and wars currently waging globally. As his initial sketches progressed, he outlined an entire story and fashioned a plan to chronicle the worlds and the odyssey he envisioned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The premise of Rozanski\u2019s novel revolves around a main, central character (whom he dreamt about), who, having lost everything, is battling his way back home, opposed and pursued by a military powerhouse \u2013 a mythological and archetypal hero\u2019s journey, if not a prescient one.\u00a0 Since he has his adventure fully mapped out, and realized, Rozanski\u2019s primary work is exposition, but he does often find himself engrossed by new ideas and developments, keeping a notebook close by to document them in a timely manner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A persistent challenge for any science-fiction writer is visualizing with credible attention, the smallest, nuanced and technical details in the new worlds or planets, the protagonist is exposed to and set in or set against. Rozanski has had to establish a rigorous approach to research, but clearly relies on his ingenuity and creative enthusiasm to resolve descriptions of events and places unseen and realized only through his writing \u2013 \u201cmaking up random ideas that I think would be cool, even if it doesn’t work scientifically,\u201d Rozanski explains.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a lifelong science fiction fan, Rozanski feels it is natural that his first foray into fiction be in the same genre. He cites Frank Patrick Herbert Jr. as a prominent influence, and Arthur C. Clarke, as a writer he admires, both of whom have produced monumental works of staggering originality. Rozanski points out that he draws from all forms of media \u2013 books, movies and television shows, as source material.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a year of steady work, with five chapters completed, Rozanski aims to complete his first novel within the next eighteen months. With his studies and athletic commitments, he carves out enough time to write every two or three days. He has not thought about publishing or those elements of storytelling. His emphasis is on the characters and their interactions within the plot and the dimensions they explore and battle in. Rozanski sees the project as a potential introduction to post-secondary education in journalism, or possibly a career in teaching, or hopefully, even as a professional fiction writer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encouraged by his English teacher, perhaps to sharpen his skills and hone his evolving craftsmanship, Rozanski has published two articles for the local magazine Almaguin Highlands this year. His grandmother, Bonnie Rozanski, is an author and prize-winning playwright currently living in Pennsylvania. During COVID, Rozanski emigrated from New Jersey to Guelph, Ontario, with his family, and now resides in Burk\u2019s Falls, where his parents run a family business, Soil and Stone Earthworks, a speciality landscaping service. Living in a rural setting is a relatively new experience for Rozanski, especially the travel distances required for school and shopping, but he finds the natural environment to be both compelling and instructive.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an active student, Rozanski is also a member of the North Bay Spartans Basketball team and other teams at his high school. While his novel occupies much of his free time and many of his thinking hours, he balances scholastic requirements and writing with his participation in the family-oriented business.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, Rozanski is unsure what the outcome of his novel will be, leaving that until its completion. If published, he will rely on his grandmother, Bonnie Rozanski\u2019s experience, advice, and expertise. Rozanski is, moreover, quite excited about the possibility of side projects emerging from the initial novel, such as possible sequels, spin-offs, short stories, and other potential endeavours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a single dream foretelling a new world, Rozanski has embarked on a pilgrimage fuelLed by his own efforts, musings, and creative imagination. Only time, and his own forbearance, blended with the smallest of good fortune, will determine the final result.\u00a0
