And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0free!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The next webinar on\u00a0Tuesday, Jan. 27<\/strong>, begins with\u00a0Gord Miller\u00a0of\u00a0Earthroots. He is\u00a0a\u00a0retired\u00a0ecologist living in Muskoka, who\u00a0has published scientific papers in\u00a0the aquatic\u00a0sciences and worked as a researcher, environmental field officer, teaching\u00a0professor\u00a0and environmental consultant. He is best known for his 15 years as the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, where he oversaw government decision-making on matters related to the environment.\u00a0<strong>Gord Miller presents\u00a0The Littoral\u00a0Zone \u2013\u00a0Lots of\u00a0Action at the\u00a0Lake\u2019s\u00a0Rim\u00a0<\/strong>The presentation will introduce the audience to the concept of the littoral zone of lakes by focusing on four questions: What are the parts of the littoral zone? How does it function ecologically? How important is it to the whole lake ecosystem?\u00a0And,\u00a0how is human interaction with the littoral zone important? Participants will be exposed to a new lexicon of terms and concepts that will inform them of the dynamics of how lakes work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up next, on\u00a0Jan.\u00a027\u00a0is Dr. Norman Yan,\u00a0who has worked with the Ontario government, then York University and founded Friends of the Muskoka Watershed.\u00a0For\u00a0over half a century, he has worked\u00a0to understand and, where possible, resolve the threats to the health of Ontario\u2019s lakes. He has focused his research on the threats to animal plankton, the so-called \u201clittle living lawnmowers\u201d in lakes.\u00a0He was recognized with his induction as a fellow in the Royal Society of Canada in 2012.\u00a0Dr\u00a0Norman Yan\u00a0presents\u00a0<strong>For the\u00a0Love of\u00a0Daphnia:\u00a0 How\u00a0Tiny\u00a0Creatures Make Our\u00a0Lakes\u00a0Work<\/strong>.<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>There are\u00a0thousands\u00a0of species that inhabit the offshore waters of Muskoka lakes. While\u00a0almost all\u00a0are invisibly small,\u00a0they are vital to the health of our lakes. Dr Yan will introduce you to\u00a0his favourite,\u00a0the water flea\u00a0Daphnia. Despite being only\u00a0one\u00a0mm long,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0amazing.\u00a0\u00a0She swims the\u00a0equivalent\u00a0of a marathon every day. He will explain her food too. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0like eating the glass bowl to get at the salad.\u201d\u00a0 She and her kin filter the equivalent volume of the whole lake free of algae every 1 to 2 weeks, keeping lake waters clear. Norman will share Daphnia\u2019s story to help you understand the importance of protecting even the tiny creatures in our lakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>On\u00a0Tuesday, Feb. 3<\/strong>\u00a0Dr. Andrew\u00a0Paterson,\u00a0a\u00a0senior research scientist with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and an adjunct professor at both Queen\u2019s University and University of Waterloo, will lead a presentation. He leads a 50-year monitoring program of sentinel lakes in south-central Ontario\u00a0and conducts collaborative research to understand how\u00a0lakewater\u00a0quality and ecology is\u00a0impacted\u00a0by multiple environmental stressors. His research is sharply focused on science that informs or improves environmental policy and lake management.<strong> <\/strong>Paterson\u00a0presents\u00a0<strong>When\u00a0Lakes\u00a0Fall\u00a0Ill: A\u00a0Review of\u00a0Current\u00a0Threats to\u00a0Lake\u00a0Health in Ontario<\/strong>.\u00a0Across the globe, inland lakes are being altered by climate change, pollutants, landscape degradation, and the introduction of non-native species. Long-term monitoring and new research\u00a0show\u00a0us that lakes respond to these stressors in complex and surprising ways, with important implications for water quality and aquatic biota. However, these data also show us that lakes can respond positively and rapidly to restoration efforts, underscoring their remarkable resilience and the value of creating effective environmental legislation and policies. In a review of the latest science, this presentation will explore current threats to lake health in Ontario, and how these threats may interact to\u00a0impact\u00a0aquatic ecosystems. Where possible, it will also discuss the steps we can take to help protect these sensitive ecosystems for future generations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The second presentation on\u00a0Feb. 3<\/strong>\u00a0is by Elder\u00a0Christopher Stock (TEHONAT\u00c1HNHEN)\u00a0who\u00a0is a 5th generation member of the W\u00e1hta Mohawks, whose ancestors\u00a0relocated\u00a0from\u00a0Kanehsat\u00e0:ke\u00a0\u2013 Oka, Quebec to Muskoka in 1881. He began his teaching career with the W\u00e1hta Mohawk\u2019s\u00a0Kinderkids\u00a0Program, a unique outdoor education program for JK\/SK students. He is a\u00a0graduate of Queen\u2019s University\u2019s Indigenous Teacher Education Program.\u00a0\u00a0His interactive Indigenous Cultural Experiences offer an introduction to North America\u2019s Indigenous Peoples\u00a0and their culture, creating a welcoming, inviting, engaging, positive experience, and an opportunity to build a bridge towards active and sustaining Truth and Reconciliation.\u00a0\u00a0Christopher Stock (TEHONAT\u00c1HNHEN presents\u00a0\u201cShe is resting\u201d: Winter and the\u00a0important role\u00a0of ice.\u00a0The presentation focuses on\u00a0Restoring\u00a0Our Relationships &#8211; With Nature and the Natural World.\u00a0\u00a0Winter.\u00a0The time of rest. Our mother Earth is covered with a warm blanket of snow, allowing her to sleep and rest\u00a0up before Spring.\u00a0All of\u00a0the lakes are covered over with a thick layer of ice to cap off and allow the waters to still and settle and reset, and\u00a0all of\u00a0the life in the water continues, yet slowly. For some, they bury themselves into the mud and slumber, while others seek refuge in the deep waters and continue at a slower pace. The Earth goes through its natural rhythm and cycle to reset the balance and the natural order of things.\u00a0The role of responsibility, stewardship and of a reciprocity relationship with all of Creation\u00a0in order to\u00a0foster balance and Harmony for all. Our way of existing on this planet is coexistence with the natural world, not to try to control the natural world.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe One Dish with One Spoon\u201d Treaty is an agreement accepted by more than 50+ nations from the Arctic Circle to Mexico and East of the Great River &#8211; The Mississippi River, including Prince Edward Island,\u00a0Newfoundland\u00a0and Labrador. Indigenous peoples strive for peace, balance, unity, harmony, honour, respect, love,\u00a0thanks\u00a0and gratitude for all life.
