{"id":213552,"date":"2026-01-08T17:24:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T22:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/?p=213552"},"modified":"2026-01-08T17:24:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T22:24:21","slug":"ontario-tightens-highway-traffic-act-penalties-to-target-impaired-driving-stunt-driving-and-auto-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/ontario-tightens-highway-traffic-act-penalties-to-target-impaired-driving-stunt-driving-and-auto-theft\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario tightens Highway Traffic Act penalties to target impaired driving, stunt driving and auto theft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ontario government has brought a series of amendments to the Highway Traffic Act into force as of January 1, 2026, aimed at curbing dangerous driving behaviours and cracking down on motor vehicle theft.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Ministry of Transportation, the changes introduce tougher penalties for impaired driving, stunt driving and auto theft, while also giving police broader authority to disrupt organized vehicle theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a lifetime driver\u2019s licence suspension for impaired drivers who cause a death. The province says the measure is intended to reinforce the seriousness of impaired driving and strengthen accountability for the most severe offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amendments also expand mandatory remedial education programs, which will now apply to first-time alcohol- or drug-related administrative driving occurrences, not just criminal convictions. In addition, roadside licence suspensions for first- and second-time alcohol or drug-related incidents have been lengthened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers convicted of stunt driving will now face mandatory minimum licence suspensions that are automatically applied, removing the need for courts to order them separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address rising auto theft, Ontario has introduced escalating licence suspensions for Criminal Code motor vehicle theft convictions, including a lifetime suspension for a third conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The province has also created a new offence under the Highway Traffic Act targeting vehicle fraud. Anyone convicted of knowingly providing a false vehicle identification number (VIN) during a vehicle transaction could face fines of up to $100,000, up to six months in jail, and driver\u2019s licence or vehicle permit suspensions of up to one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further amendments grant police the authority to search for and seize electronic devices intended for use in vehicle theft, such as reprogramming or keyless entry hacking tools.
