{"id":190553,"date":"2025-05-11T14:21:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-11T18:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/?p=190553"},"modified":"2025-05-11T14:21:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T18:21:28","slug":"community-members-to-celebrate-the-united-church-of-canadas-100th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/community-members-to-celebrate-the-united-church-of-canadas-100th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Community members to celebrate the United Church of Canada&#8217;s 100th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On June 10, 2025, Trinity United Church, Huntsville, will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the United Church of Canada.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A special Anniversary Service to commemorate the event will be held at Trinity United Church, 33 Main St. E, Huntsville, on Sunday, June 8th, from 10 to 11 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Church of Canada came together in 1925 through a union of mainly three large denominations: Methodists, Congregationalists, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterians in Canada at that time \u2014 one of the first ecumenical unions in the world to bring together major Christian denominations into one body. It is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada. It was formed by an Act of the Canadian Parliament and celebrated its inauguration on July 10, 1925, at Mutual Street Arena in Toronto, which was packed with representatives of the three founding churches (mostly male.. the United Church has come a long way since that day!), noted long-time member Julie Brushey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The United Church has a rich, progressive and continuing history of welcoming all in the name of\u00a0 Christ. People of all backgrounds and orientations, wherever they are in their faith journey, are welcome,&#8221; she noted via email correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 100th birthday of the United Church of Canada will be celebrated by about 2500 congregations across the country on the closest Sunday which is June 8, 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At Trinity United in Huntsville, that Sunday service will include the welcoming of new members and the celebration of Pentecost\u201450 days after Easter when the Holy Spirit entered Jesus&#8217;\u00a0disciples enabling them to go out and preach in his name (all Christian churches celebrate Pentecost; it&#8217;s just a coincidence that this year it falls on the anniversary of the formation of the United Church),&#8221; explained Brushey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brushey, a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada who has been a member of Trinity United in Huntsville for 22 years and has served on some of its governing councils, will be the guest speaker at the service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will speak about her &#8220;overall enthusiasm for all that the United Church has done and is doing, especially in social justice,&#8221; as well as her experience and what she cherishes about the church. The morning celebration will end with a giant birthday cake to be shared in Trinity Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is easy for congregations to get caught up in their own patterns of worship and their own outreach efforts in the local community. But we are all part of something much bigger and it is good for us to pause from time to time to celebrate that we are part of the United Church of Canada.
