When the ice storm hit the region on March 30, an estimated 94,000 customers lost power, the bulk in South Muskoka when two feeder lines, one in Bracebridge and one in Gravenhurst were damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of yesterday, there were still approximately 14,000 customers in Muskoka without power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The District held an emergency council meeting yesterday, and staff were given the green light to continue with restoration efforts, which had already cost about $36,750 in four days, according to District staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special working group was established with delegated authority to coordinate the collection, management, and disposal of storm-related debris. The group held its first meeting yesterday afternoon and is exploring an extension to this year\u2019s leaf and yard waste collection and continuing to offer free brush drop-off at transfer stations across Muskoka. More details on storm reparation efforts below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free Brush and Chippable Wood Drop-Off<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

District waste facilities will continue to accept brush and chippable wood free of charge at least until April 30, 2025 (except Rideout and McLean due to space). Brush must be cut into pieces no longer than four feet. Stumps and oversized logs are not accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional Yard Waste Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support ongoing cleanup, we\u2019re finalizing plans to extend yard waste collection this year. These additional weeks of collection will focus on material that can be bundled for collection through the curbside yard waste program. Dates and service areas will be shared soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, for residents wishing to get a start on clean-up, please ensure that all yard waste is stacked on private property. Do not place materials on the road, boulevard or sidewalk to ensure safety of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food Donations Encouraged<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are in a position to help, please consider donating non-perishable food items to your local food bank. Many households experienced food loss due to extended power outages, and food banks are working hard to meet increased demand. A little goes a long way when we all come together. For a list of food bank locations in your area, please visit our website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ice Storm Assistance – Crisis Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The District has set up an Ice Storm Assistance phone line and email to support residents experiencing urgent needs related to the recent storm. If you or someone you know needs help with urgent issues such as no heat, food, water, medication, or blocked road access, please call: 705-645-2100 ext. 4500<\/a> or email icestorm@muskoka.on.ca<\/a>. This service is available Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Voicemails can be left outside of operating hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

District Continues<\/strong> to Support Critical Fuel Deliveries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the current State of Emergency declaration still in place throughout the District, the District has confirmed that it is not enforcing half load restrictions for essential service delivery and restoration as our community recovers. This includes delivery of such services as food, water, heating fuel, brush hauling, and power supply. This will allow for expedited delivery of critical services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This applies to all District of Muskoka roads, but does not extend to load restricted bridges or non-essential services (concrete delivery for development\/construction, for example).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crews at Work this Weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

District crews are out performing road maintenance this weekend, in addition to other teams supporting cleanup efforts across Muskoka. If you’re travelling, please give crews the space they need to work safely and efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
