{"id":187971,"date":"2025-03-18T21:04:38","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T01:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/?p=187971"},"modified":"2025-03-18T21:04:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T01:04:40","slug":"district-to-change-the-name-of-twelve-mile-bay-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/district-to-change-the-name-of-twelve-mile-bay-road\/","title":{"rendered":"District to change the name of Twelve Mile Bay Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Muskoka road is up for a name change with the goal of strengthening relations between the area\u2019s Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, the District of Muskoka\u2019s Finance and Corporate Services Committee will consider approving a project to rename Twelve Mile Bay Road, which extends from Hwy 400 through Moose Deer Point First Nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name change falls under the prerogative of the Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table (MAILT), which was formed in 2019 and includes representation from several municipal governments and First Nations organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of their mandate was to rename some Muskoka Roads with a focus on Truth and Reconciliation, such as Muskoka Road 38, which was renamed Kanien\u2019keh\u00e1:ka Iohat\u00e1tie in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During MAILT discussions Indigenous members suggested there was value in changing the names of roads that connect Indigenous Nations to non-Indigenous communities. They suggested Twelve Mile Bay Road, which runs from Hwy 400 through Moose Deer Point First Nation, would benefit from an Indigenous language and community-chosen name.
