{"id":183354,"date":"2024-12-20T19:24:38","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T00:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/?p=183354"},"modified":"2024-12-22T20:45:59","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T01:45:59","slug":"hhs-students-to-embark-on-a-historical-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/hhs-students-to-embark-on-a-historical-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"HHS students to embark on a historical journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>They say if you don&#8217;t know your history, you are doomed to repeat it \u2014 Huntsville High School students will get an opportunity to travel back in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of 36 students will embark on a trip of a lifetime scheduled for April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students will be travelling to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands to visit key sites related to Canada&#8217;s involvement in both World Wars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will be exploring the stories of Huntsville veterans, and then they&#8217;ll be travelling to Europe to actually experience that history!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WWI highlights will include Ypres, Belgium, where Canadians saw the first gas attack in 1915; &#8220;In Flanders Fields&#8221; author John McCrae&#8217;s field hospital; Passchendaele museum; Beaumont-Hamel memorial on the bloody Somme and the trenches; museum and memorial at Vimy Ridge (1917), France. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WWII history will include a visit to Juno Beach in Normandy and Canada&#8217;s D-Day landing site in 1944 through to the Netherlands, Anne Frank House (who tragically perished in 1945), Holocaust museum in Amsterdam, and several war cemeteries from both wars,&nbsp;locating the resting places of several of Huntsville&#8217;s fallen. Plus everything in between, including, of course, the jewel of Europe &#8211; Paris. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip will be led by veteran HHS history teachers Jeff Young, Pauline Webb, and Trevor Arndt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A special community fundraising\/educational dinner event will take place at the Huntsville Legion on the evening of Friday, February 21, 2025.
