{"id":17279,"date":"2016-07-08T05:56:52","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T09:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=17279"},"modified":"2016-07-07T21:15:51","modified_gmt":"2016-07-08T01:15:51","slug":"town-says-needle-cast-disease-and-other-factors-contributed-to-removal-of-trees-at-river-mill-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/town-says-needle-cast-disease-and-other-factors-contributed-to-removal-of-trees-at-river-mill-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Town says needle cast disease and other factors contributed to removal of trees at River Mill Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s taken a while to get a response but according to Huntsville Manager of Parks and Cemeteries Colleen MacDonald, the disease afflicting the two spruce trees that were removed from River Mill Park was needle cast disease.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong> <broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>According to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guelphlabservices.com\/files\/PDC\/066SpruceNeedleCast.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">fact sheet<\/a><\/span> compiled by the University of Guelph\u2019s laboratory, needle cast is a fungal disease. Most infections usually begin in spring and symptoms arise in late summer.  The tree\u2019s lower branches are usually impacted the most with the disease eventually making its way up the tree. \u201cBranch dieback can occur after 3 to 4 years of successive defoliation. Needles shed and branch dieback can create holes amongst healthy branches,\u201d according to the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not just that condition that had us make the decision but also the water table in that area is quite high, the soils aren\u2019t great and just the fact that we saw them start to decline, we knew that they weren\u2019t going to improve,\u201d she said. MacDonald added that the decision was not made lightly and sadly, she said, there may be two other trees in the park that will suffer the same fate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t take the removal of trees lightly but certainly we make sure it is justified when it does have to happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was first raised at Huntsville Council\u2019s June meeting by Councillor Bob Stone who questioned what had happened to the trees. MacDonald clarified that the trees that were removed were not pines, as first reported, but blue spruce trees.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"modern-quote full\"><p>There are other trees of the same species in that park that we\u2019ll watch that (needle cast disease) could also be present in. Unfortunately not all trees live forever but we try to nurture them along as much as possible, because they were planted in their original position for a reason but there are some really challenging conditions in that park \u2013 like the soil, the water table, even the foot traffic\u2026 that all plays into it.<br \/>\n<cite>Colleen MacDonald, Manager of Parks and Cemeteries for the Town of Huntsville<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In terms of new trees being planted to make up for those that have been removed, MacDonald said planting after the <a href=\"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/no-new-parking-for-river-mill-park-may-lead-to-improved-safety-at-brunel-intersection\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">existing parking area has been turned to green space<\/span><\/a> may be best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally I was thinking that if that parking area is going to change to green space, maybe we\u2019d be wisest to wait until that\u2019s done to see where the trees would fit best. Because that is going to change a little bit down there, I\u2019m not sure where the grade will wind up but I suspect where the parking is now the grade will be raised slightly to make it blend better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t miss out on Doppler!
