{"id":157889,"date":"2024-07-10T14:55:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T18:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/rwddev\/?p=157889"},"modified":"2024-07-10T15:10:49","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T19:10:49","slug":"mnr-issues-flood-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/mnr-issues-flood-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"MNR issues flood watch statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>From the MNR<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Natural Resources \u2013 Bracebridge-Minden-Parry Sound District is advising area residents that a Watershed Conditions Statement \u2013 Flood Outlook Bulletin is in effect for the district until Friday, July 19, 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This message is intended for residents and visitors within the MNR Bracebridge-Minden-Parry&nbsp;Sound District for portions of the District of Parry Sound, District of Muskoka, County of Haliburton, and City of Kawartha Lakes within the Black, Burnt, Gull, Magnetawan, Muskoka, Pickerel, Seguin,&nbsp; and Severn River Watersheds<strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hurricane Beryl made landfall along the Texas coast of the USA on July 8 and has significantly&nbsp; weakened after landfall. While moving northeast and towards the Lower Great Lakes, remnants of&nbsp; Beryl are forecast to merge with an upper trough that is currently over central North America,&nbsp;creating a highly efficient conveyor belt of moisture into southern Ontario.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remnants of Hurricane Beryl reached Ontario on the evening of July 9. It is forecasted that this may result in significant precipitation into the southern portion of the province over the next few days. Confidence on the exact path of the system is low.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MNR Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) updated the Provincial Flood Watch on July 10 and indicated that the areas at greatest risk of the heaviest rainfall are situated immediately south of&nbsp; Georgian Bay and along the St. Lawrence River. These areas could receive 50-100mm of total rainfall from this event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lower-lying portions of known flood-prone areas may be impacted to varying degrees as lake\/river levels rise in response to received precipitation. Residents and visitors should exercise caution <strong>while around waterbodies <\/strong>and maintain close supervision of children and pets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MNR also advises <strong>extreme caution when using forest access roads <\/strong>for outdoor activities as they&nbsp; may become seasonally inundated with water, are prone to washouts and may become impassible&nbsp; due to localized flooding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents who have been affected by high water and flow conditions in the past should continue to take necessary action to protect\/secure any vulnerable property in proximity to rivers and lakes, closely monitor developing conditions, and regularly check for updated messages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TECHNICAL INFORMATION&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Description of Weather System&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environment Canada Issued a Rainfall Warning for the Muskoka-Parry Sound area on July 9 at &nbsp;2:00pm. Rainfall with embedded torrential downpours expected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall totals of 40 to 60 mm, with locally higher amounts are possible. There is a potential for &nbsp;torrential downpours with rainfall rates of 20 to 40 mm per hour at times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall in the area started on the evening of July 9 and is forecasted to continue through to the &nbsp;morning of July 11. The heaviest rain is anticipated to occur on July 10 into the evening. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rainfall amounts are expected to be highly variable across the region, and some areas may receive &nbsp;in excess of 60 mm. Rain is forecasted to taper to scattered showers from west to east tonight &nbsp;through the early morning of July 11.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Description of Current Conditions&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MNR has conducted proactive dam operations across all watersheds in the Bracebridge-Minden-Parry Sound District to increase flows.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the Beryl weather system, water levels on most major lakes were trending down and within the Normal Operating Zone (NOZ) for this time of year.
