In likely a first, Huntsville Council will be asked Monday to decide whether to uphold an order to muzzle a dog that attacked two dogs and turned on their owner or to lift the order in response to a petition stating that the dog is not a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huntsville Bylaw Enforcement Officer Corey Crewson will present a report to council about the incident that occurred on Friday, October 21, 2022, at approximately 4 p.m. He said that on that day, the complainant was walking her dogs\u2014a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a 12-year-old Bichon Frise\u2014on leash at Grandview Hilltop Drive. The complainant went by a unit just as another dog owner was exiting the unit holding the leash to her Husky\/Golden Retriever with one hand and her scooter with the other “as she was going to go for a ride while the Husky\/Golden Retriever Cross ran beside her, as she had done in the past,” stated Crewson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Crewson’s report, the female Husky\/Golden Retriever saw the two dogs and ran towards them, causing her owner to fall to the ground and drop the leash. The dog attacked the Bichon Frise and bit the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, resulting in six puncture wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The complainant kicked the Husky\/Golden Retriever Cross on the neck, who proceeded to let go of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and then turned on the complainant, causing her to fall down on the pavement, injuring her left shoulder, elbow, hip, and both knees. In conversations with the offending dog owner, she noted that after she fell, she saw the Husky\/Golden Retriever Cross approach the complainant and the Huskie\/Golden Retriever Cross looked like she was trying to play but the complainant motioned to kick her, and the dog reacted,” he stated. ” When the dog owner was able to get up, she approached the Husky\/Golden Retriever Cross and the complainant, and apologized for what happened while retrieving the Husky\/Golden Retriever Cross.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crewson stated that the complainant called the OPP, who attended her home and took a statement. The Town’s bylaw department was also called, and following an investigation, Crewson issued a muzzle order for the dog on November 1, 2022. The order requires the dog to be muzzled when outside of the unit on Grandview Hilltop Drive and within the municipal boundaries of Huntsville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Town subsequently received several reports from the complainant noting that the Husky\/Golden Retriever was seen on many instances without a muzzle. “In each follow-up, a muzzle was shown, and it was indicated that they used it.” Crewson also noted that the dog’s face is dark and so is the muzzle, making it hard to see. “As a result of these reports, the dog owner’s mother has requested a deputation to have the muzzle order lifted and she has supplied a petition with several names<\/span><\/a> in support of having the muzzle order lifted,” stated Crewson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complainant has also requested to go before council to argue in support of the muzzle order. Crewson, in his report, is presenting council with the following options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
