That\u2019s how I\u2019d describe the process of getting the Northlander once more on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly six years, the Ford government repeatedly stated they\u2019re bringing back passenger rail to north-eastern Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political promises aplenty, the Tories haven\u2019t exactly gotten the job done during their first term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metrolinx and Ontario Northland (ONTC) eventually completed initial and updated initial business cases, track audits, as well as purchase new rolling stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback was also received on the type of service passengers want and on the new Timmins-Porcupine Station design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re currently working on building station shelters elsewhere along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government <a href=\"https:\/\/ontarionorthland.ca\/en\/travel\/northlander-passenger-train\"><strong>claims<\/strong><\/a> the Northlander will<em> fundamentally shift how people move across the province by creating a more connected, integrated transportation network<\/em> once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OntarioTransportation\/posts\/pfbid05PMENuwyE94bHTvbMtXUurSt2zSmD3VGYnox9yVeNsvNXc6mL3cU3wdRdmewDSyRl?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZUGydcB9LrfyQCqUhGiu1s6KHH3T0ADMOJ70oAW2sj4DCw-G-3L0Ov0NRkUbiDqdh-sJaAyBt2SfBCAwH25SzzdQfCtToNIRbMnDQdQqodqOKiQ_pgqpqK\"><strong>re-launched<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will it happen before the next provincial election? We\u2019re two years removed and still in the public engagement stage of planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ask me, the jury is still out whether this train will be designed with ordinary people in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous Northlander had its shortcomings:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inconvenient schedules \u2015 night time arrivals and early morning departures in Toronto \u2015 made trip planning more difficult and expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-existent rail-bus connections \u2015 e.g. between Washago Station and nearby cities of Barrie and Orillia \u2015 rendered last mile travel complicated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Routine delays \u2015 sometimes exceeding many hours \u2015 turned away potential riders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t take a master\u2019s degree to understand basic transportation fundamentals: make it regular, easy to use, reliable, affordable and comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inconsistent policies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Northerners are getting the short end of the stick after the province introduced a fare integration program between GO Transit and a dozen municipal transit agencies around Greater Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presto Card holders who complete a trip on GO, can finish the last leg of their journey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrolinx.com\/en\/discover\/free-local-fares-kick-off-with-most-local-transit-agencies\"><strong>free of charge<\/strong><\/a> on municipal busses, streetcars and subways. Ontario Northland customers don\u2019t benefit from this incentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare instances where a similar arrangement exists in Orillia, travellers pay an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orilliamatters.com\/local-news\/pilot-project-aims-to-provide-seamless-city-transit-use-to-ontario-northland-passengers-8364363\"><strong>additional fee<\/strong><\/a> on top of their purchased ticket; whether or not they use local transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering fare evasion is widespread across GO\u2019s network \u2015 up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/metrolinx-targets-inspections-fines-go-train-1.7025354\">$15 million in lost revenue<\/a> annually, it\u2019s ironic that Northerners pay out-of-pocket to use public transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems hypocritical that while tax-payers across the province subsidize GO Transit, the Northlander will largely be funded by the ONTC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timminspress.com\/news\/northlander-passenger-rail-service-will-be-funded-by-freight-contracts\"><strong>rail freight division profits<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Missed opportunities<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Has the government finally realized that bypassing large and midsized cities doesn\u2019t make sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old Northlander and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viarail.ca\/en\/explore-our-destinations\/trains\/western-canada\"><strong>VIA Rail\u2019s Canadian<\/strong><\/a> are one of the nation\u2019s only long-haul passenger trains that don\u2019t make stops for a <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Unc23tFUs9fj9AVq9\"><strong>143 km stretch<\/strong><\/a> \u2015 north of Hog Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I applaud the province&#8217;s decision to include Langstaff and Gormley as new stops, I wonder whether underserved towns are being overlooked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beaverton, a community of Brock Township that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durhamregion.com\/news\/metrolinx-cancels-route-81-bus-connecting-north-durham-to-whitby-train-station\/article_21db2d25-3b46-52e6-b973-fb8909f5c835.html\"><strong>lost GO bus service<\/strong><\/a> nearly a year ago, is roughly half-way between Washago and Toronto on the very tracks the Northlander will use when reintroduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid02pcVdXqRu3oc53yCXZD8wP2CochveX79HNPF2AqB4zDFwpHMZaK5S3WYrBdqHGufKl&amp;id=100063534595661\"><strong>petitioned<\/strong><\/a> for rail service. Why isn&#8217;t this area being considered for a stop?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further north, residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baytoday.ca\/local-news\/cobalt-urged-to-lobby-for-northlander-passenger-train-stop-6594556\"><strong>Cobalt<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/northernontario.ctvnews.ca\/future-northlander-passengers-give-input-at-public-information-session-1.6583913\"><strong>Iroquois Falls<\/strong><\/a> have also raised concerns of their communities being sidestepped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More questions than answers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many details need to be ironed out before the traveling public can reasonably take the Tories at their word regarding passenger rail in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prematurely launching before <a href=\"https:\/\/kitchener.ctvnews.ca\/london-toronto-go-train-service-ends-leaving-stratford-with-fewer-options-1.6600741\"><strong>cancelling<\/strong> <strong>London&#8217;s GO train<\/strong><\/a> doesn&#8217;t exactly evoke confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, three different people held the position of associate minister of transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While progress has been made on the Northlander, timelines have shifted more than once since the Tories took office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There remains little information on fares, frequency, track use agreements or mechanisms in place to protect against future political interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politicians insist the Northlander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baytoday.ca\/local-news\/fedeli-says-northlander-will-not-be-an-election-issue-7944880\"><strong>won&#8217;t be an election<\/strong> issue<\/a> in 2026.
