Hernen recognized for his achievement <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Firechief\"Huntsville\/Lake of Bays Fire Chief Steve Hernen was congratulated by Council for his appointment as President of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs. Det Schumacher, who has been involved with the fire department as a volunteer firefighter as well as a councillor, especially in the Port Sydney area, said he has worked closely with the Fire Chief and said he respects his professionalism. Hernen thanked Council and the Town CEO for supporting him. He said it is time that small rural towns in Ontario have a stronger voice and that\u2019s the platform he ran on successfully. \u201cRest assured taxpayers that the Association pays for it all, the Town\u2019s not paying for it,\u201d he said to laughs from Council and those in the gallery. \"artcontest\"Huntsville Mayor announces art contest winners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Winners of the Mayor\u2019s art contest were announced at Council. The Mayor\u2019s Choice went to VK Greer\u2019s Grade 3 student Leah Richterttehe. The Curator\u2019s Choice Award went to Spruce Glen\u2019s Grade 2 student Maiya Dales and the People\u2019s Choice Award went to VK Greer\u2019s Grade 8 student Amber Kerr. Honourable mentions also went out to VK Greer students Shannon Stark, Dawson Stevenson and Amber Kerr as well as Spruce Glen Public School\u2019s Ella Clark and Justin Frechette. Council had a few visitors too\u2026<\/p>\n

Adrienne Starr on medical cannabis and homelessness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starr spoke to Council about being homeless in Huntsville, domestic violence and the dysfunctionality of the very system created to help those in vulnerable situations. She also spoke about the mentally ill, neurologically divergent, the use of cannabis as a medicine, and societal prejudices as well as the abuse women, including those of aboriginal descent, are subjected to. \u201cWhen these things are not happening to you or your group it is easy to ignore and to trust in false solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spoke of the need to empower women by giving them the ability to house themselves. She spoke of small, singular dwellings made of non-toxic, sustainable materials. She said she was refused shelter for a two-week homeless allowance at Chrysalis because of the inability of staff to accommodate her medical cannabis use for which she has a medical prescription. She said others have experienced similar situations and urged Council to think outside the box. She offered some solutions related to the type of housing allowed and encouraged in order to house women and other vulnerable groups. Huntsville Councillor Nancy Alcock concurred and thanked Starr for her presentation while Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison asked Starr to leave her notes and committed to meet with her to further explore her concerns.<\/p>\n

Pipefusion\u2019s 35th<\/sup> anniversary donation<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"PipeAn art installation by the name of \u201cPipe Man\u201d in the image of Tom Thomson is being donated to the Town by Pipefusion president Jan Nyquist. According to a report to Council by Arts, Culture and Heritage Manager Teri Souter, the art installation concept was created by Pipefusion in close consultation with local artist Beverley Hawksley and fabricated by Pipefusion technologists. Souter, who according to Nyquist came up with the idea of the Pipe Man, said she has been working closely with Pipefusion Vice President Libby Boucher on the project.<\/p>\n

The 18 foot by 4 foot statue will grace the north branch of the Muskoka River near the swing bridge. It will be seen at night through an internal solar light. Souter reported that the Pipe Man, reminiscent of Tom Thomson, \u201cwill be a community asset which may be leveraged for the (planned) Tom Thomson 100th and Canada\u2019s 150th<\/sup> events and activities in 2017.\u201d Council thanked Nyquist for the donation.The installation was approved pending a required navigable waterways permit, which Boucher said she did not think would present a problem. Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison thanked Nyquist for the donation and congratulated him on his company\u2019s anniversary.<\/p>\n

Delegation on Swing Bridge heritage mural<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pipefusion has also graciously agreed to mount and cover the cost of framing a black and white photo installation on the north-facing concrete wall of the swing bridge. Huntsville residents Suzanne Riverin, Diane Thoms and Kareen Burns will be donating the photo installation to the Town. The plan would see a photo of Gordon and Maxine Thoms canoeing on Mary Lake\u2019s Thoms Bay. Maxine was a descendant of the Hanes family and both the Hanes and Thoms were original settlers in the area.<\/p>\n

It takes a forest initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Huntsville resident Rob Keen of Forest Ontario and Gord Cummings of Algonquin Forestry Authority were before Council talking about the bad rap the forestry industry gets by those who do not understand the importance of sustainable forestry practices. He spoke of the disconnect between rural and urban areas and asked Council to spread the word about the social, economic and environmental importance associated with sustainable forestry. Ice cream truck<\/strong><\/p>\n

Council was asked to approve a business license for an ice cream truck. The request was brought forward by Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer Andrew Stillar. He noted it was the first time a request had been made under the business licensing bylaw for an ice cream truck to operate in the town.<\/p>\n

According to the report to Council, the request would allow John Athanasiou of Johnny\u2019s Frozen Treats to operate from any boulevard, sidewalk, park or other municipal property within the municipality. He said his department has been made aware that \u201cthe concession operator at both Hutcheson Beach and McCulley have exclusive rights to food and beverage services, therefore the concession operator will also need to give permission for the ice cream truck to operate.\u201d Councillors Det Schumacher, Karin Terziano and Jason Fitzgerald expressed concerns with the ambulatory ice cream truck competing with established year-round businesses. Councillor Nancy Alcock expressed similar hesitation, although her concerns were related specifically to the River Mill Park area and surrounding businesses. In the end, a majority of Council opted to grant the license, provided the ice cream truck does not park in any one spot for more than two hours. The approval was given with the caveat to revisit the issue if complaints arise.<\/p>\n

Speed control measures in Ravensglen Crescent area<\/strong><\/p>\n

A report was brought forth to Council regarding a three-way stop at Ravensglen Crescent and Ravensglen Drive as well as a posted speed reduction for the area to 30km\/hr. The move stems from traffic complaints following events at McCulley-Robertson Park. Council approved the recommendation.<\/p>\n

Washrooms at River Mill Park<\/strong><\/p>\n

Huntsville CAO Denise Corry told Council that a plan is still being worked out for the use of public washrooms with the new owners where the Huntsville\/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce was situated. In the interim, or at least for the month of June, she suggested placing two porta potties in the park. Council endorsed that recommendation. One of the porta potties will be accessible to wheelchairs.<\/p>\n

CN Train Station<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Town will enter into a one-year lease agreement with the Huntsville-Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce for space at the CN Train Station at $4.74 per square foot which works out to $630 per month or $7,584 per year. Community Development Officer Scott Ovell said the lease is short-term while the Chamber finds its footing and moves forward as an organization and there will still be working user groups on site moving the Culture Station forward.<\/p>\n

Hospital Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison reported on the last taskforce meeting looking into the hospital issue. He said the meeting was positive and a subgroup, The Muskoka and Area Healthcare Transformation Council, was established to look at reforming healthcare in Muskoka. He said those savings will in turn hopefully eliminate the constant crisis the acute care system is in. He said he feels extremely positive that an alternative to the one-hospital model proposed might be found. See related story here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

A bit of good news from Debbie Kirwin<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chair of Huntsville’s Accessibility Advisory Committee told Council she had some good news: Al’s Taxi now has a wheelchair accessible cab. “So I don’t have to be a DD anymore,” she said to laughs.<\/p>\n
