The Huntsville\/Lake of Bays Fire Department is looking at an innovative way of supporting firefighters, fire department staff, and victims of traumatic events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire Chief Gary Monahan was before Lake of Bays Council on March 12 asking for council approval in order to enter into an agreement for a trauma support dog, which has been offered to the department free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re responding to more and more tragic incidents and a lot of departments, a lot of victim services, a lot of organizations are using dogs as another tool to assist with the first responders and staff in traumatic events.” Monahan said the fire department has a great opportunity to receive a dog and training free of charge so they were bringing the request forward to see if council would support it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Council was so supportive that Councillor Bob Lacroix even suggested that the municipality make a donation to the three organizations,  Lucky Labs<\/a>, Keans K9,<\/a> and Citadel K9 Society<\/a>, offering the dog to the fire department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake of Bays CAO Bryan Brown noted that such dogs, including their training, could cost about 4,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report presented to council by Monahan notes that in recent years, there has been growing recognition of the importance of mental health support for first responders, including firefighters, who often face traumatic and distressing situations as part of their duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Current support programs for our firefighters include; Peer Support Team, Fire Department Chaplains and Employees Assistance Program. With the increase in call volume and traumatic incidents the department is facing, our goal is to continue to expand the support available to our members to ensure they remain healthy as well as the community that we serve.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trauma support dogs, also known as therapy dogs, “are specifically trained to provide comfort and emotional support to individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or trauma.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs offer unconditional love, companionship, and non-judgmental support, which can alleviate feelings of loneliness, depression and anxiety. Other therapeutic benefits include an increase in morale and a natural mood boost for individuals struggling with mental health issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report speaks to social connection and the social interaction and bonding that dogs facilitate. “A certified Trauma Support Dog would also benefit the Fire Prevention Division when delivering Fire Safety Messages\/Public Education Events and visits to schools, retirement homes etc. Expanding support options for our firefighters and staff may assist with retention and may decrease possible WSIB Claims to the town,” reads the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked by council, Monahan indicated that the main handler\/caretaker would likely be the fire services coordinator who brought the idea forward. He said the dog would probably stay with her with an alternate handler\/caregiver on the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
