{"id":150259,"date":"2024-02-15T16:26:14","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T21:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/rwddev\/?p=150259"},"modified":"2024-02-15T16:26:25","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T21:26:25","slug":"charges-laid-following-investment-fraud-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/charges-laid-following-investment-fraud-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Charges laid following investment fraud investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Huntsville Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged two individuals in relation to a fraud investigation concerning a GIC investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 18, 2023, members of the Huntsville Detachment along with Muskoka Crime Unit and Anti-Rackets Branch of the OPP commenced a fraud investigation after a Huntsville couple invested approximately $680,000 into what they believed to be a legitimate institution, identified as Alterna Bank. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the account was not associated to Alterna Bank and that the representatives were utilizing\u00a0aliases<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the investigation, two individuals have been charged under the\u00a0<em>Criminal Code (CC)<\/em>\u00a0with the following offences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valerie GILLETTE, 38-year-old of Severn Bridge, has been charged with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Possession of Property obtained by crime over $5000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher GILLETTE, 39-year-old of Severn Bridge, has been charged with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Possession of Property obtained by crime over $5000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on March 19, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Warning signs and how to protect yourself against fraud:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Prior to investing, ask for information on the investment. Research the team behind the offering and analyze the feasibility of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Some fraudsters will use the name of legitimate companies to lend credibility to the fraud and convince victims to send money. Verify email addresses, URL&#8217;s, phone numbers and their physical address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Verify if the investment companies are registered with your Provincial Securities Regulator or the National Registration Search Tool (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aretheyregistered.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.aretheyregistered.ca<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If you receive a suspicious or odd investment related message from a trusted friend, reach out to them through a different means of communication to confirm that it is them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Learn more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca\/protect-protegez-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tips and tricks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for protecting yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca\/report-signalez-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">online reporting system<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. If not a victim, report it to the CAFC anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CAFC is updating the fraud and cybercrime reporting statistics available on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.canada.ca\/data\/en\/dataset\/6a09c998-cddb-4a22-beff-4dca67ab892f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Open Government Portal<\/span><\/a>.
