{"id":147411,"date":"2023-12-07T19:25:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T00:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/rwddev\/?p=147411"},"modified":"2023-12-08T07:24:48","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T12:24:48","slug":"huntsville-starting-budget-discussions-with-a-proposed-15-26-tax-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/huntsville-starting-budget-discussions-with-a-proposed-15-26-tax-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Huntsville&#8217;s draft budget is currently sitting at a proposed 15.26% tax hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When Huntsville Council meets at a Special General Committee meeting on December 12, 2023, it will have to start chipping away at its draft 2024 consolidated budget, which is currently sitting at a whopping 15.26 per cent tax increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That tax increase would translate into an additional $196 on your tax bill per $300,000 of property assessment value. The Town draft 2024 consolidated budget includes a levy increase for 2024 of $3,494,142. The total levy proposed for 2024 of $22,902,198 includes $230,000 of ongoing funding for the Local Hospital Share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The draft budget also includes assessment growth of approximately $106M, which has already been used to offset the proposed increases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;MPAC was initially scheduled to release updated assessment data in 2020 which was expected to result in significant assessment values. The release of this assessment has been delayed further and is now not expected to be released until further notice by the Province of Ontario. As a result, only assessment changes related to new growth will be realized for 2024 and at this time is estimated at $106M,&#8221; states the Town in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntsville.ca\/en\/council-and-administration\/budget-and-finances.aspx#2024\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">budget and finances section of its website<\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following discussions on December 12, budget discussions will return on January 11, 2024.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTown Staff look forward to the December 12 discussions where Council will have their first chance to hear the budgetary report with staff recommendations and to publicly discuss the Draft Budget,\u201d said&nbsp;Denise Corry, Chief Administrative Officer at the Town, in a press release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Town\u2019s budget is not immune to factors such as inflation, increasing costs, and growth, resulting in a higher proposed tax rate than previous years,&#8221; also stated Julia McKenzie, Director of Financial Services and Treasurer at the Town of Huntsville. &#8220;The Town has endeavored to provide consistent tax rates during pandemic and post-pandemic years to minimize the financial impact to residents.
