{"id":147175,"date":"2023-11-29T13:07:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T18:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/rwddev\/?p=147175"},"modified":"2023-11-29T23:28:19","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T04:28:19","slug":"woman-avoids-jail-time-for-crashing-into-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/woman-avoids-jail-time-for-crashing-into-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman avoids jail time for crashing into building\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A woman who crashed into a building in Baysville while driving impaired avoided jail time after appearing in court recently.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing in front of a Bracebridge Judge, Jassmine Brooks, 26, was sentenced after pleading guilty to impaired driving and breaching the terms of her release conditions at a previous court appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Court previously heard that on Oct. 12, 2022 at roughly 10:30 pm police were called to a motor vehicle collision in Lake of Bays Township.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A car was found crashed into a building at the intersection of Howard Street and Highway 117 in Baysville. Police determined that the vehicle had driven onto a lawn before hitting a planter box and then veering across the road and crashing into a building on the other side of the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police smelled alcohol on the driver, Brooks, who ultimately blew readings of 130 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defense lawyer Josh Fagan told the court that Brooks has no previous criminal record and didn\u2019t deserve jail time. He said she has done significant \u201cup front\u201d work and is someone suffering from an addiction but trying their best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crown Willow Petersen said they had been seeking 60 to 75 days in custody. However, she agreed that with the work Brooks has done so far, they were willing to seek a different resolution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks told the court she would like the opportunity to rehabilitate herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has been a long and difficult road for me,\u201d she told the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Cecile Applegate said the damage done to the building during the accidents had resulted in several people being out of work and many inconveniences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese people\u2019s lives were turned upside down for months afterwards,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re very lucky you didn\u2019t hurt or kill anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Applegate agreed with the defense and said she was impressed with the work Brooks had done following the accident to better herself.
