What will they think of us? <\/em>That\u2019s the question asked by the characters in \u201c100 Years from Now,\u201d an original musical about World War I coming to Huntsville\u2019s Algonquin Theatre on Nov. 4, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the remarkable story of Mae Belle Sampson, one of the first women to enlist in the Canadian Army Medical Corp., \u201c100 Years from Now\u201d tells the story of the Great War from the perspective of two brothers and the women they loved. As they write to each other in the years surrounding the war, Sampson and her friends tell the story of Canada\u2019s coming of age in the conflict that changed the country forever. <\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cThe Canada we know today was fundamentally shaped by the Great War,\u201d says show writer Jason Murphy. \u201cThe show aims to tell that story in a new and deeply personal way, including by highlighting the contributions of women on the battlefield and the home front.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drama on stage is accompanied by stunning archival imagery from the war years and a stirring Celtic music score by the Shipyard Kitchen Party band, creators of the musical \u201cTom Thomson\u2019s Wake\u201d which visited Huntsville last year to enthusiastic reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the kind of music that will make you stomp your feet in some parts of the show, laugh in other parts and maybe wipe away a tear here and there,\u201d says Murphy. \u201cIf Great Big Sea was telling you a story about the war, this might be what it sounded like!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show is touring Ontario through November and the cast is excited to have a date in Huntsville. \u201cWe loved performing here last year and we\u2019re excited to be back,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cPlus a key storyline in the show involves the timber industry and Forestry battalions, which Huntsville was obviously a big part of. So I think people will really connect with the tale we\u2019re telling.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy is also asking community groups and individuals to help make local images from the war years part of the performance. \u201cIt\u2019s something we try to do whenever we perform 100 Years,\u201d he says. \u201cWe ask the community to share their images from the war years with us. We take a selection and incorporate them into the show\u2019s opening sequence of photos. It\u2019s our way to pay tribute to local history and show how the war touched lives in every community across the country.\u201d Community members who would like to submit an image for consideration can send them to shipyardkitchenparty@gmail.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
