{"id":14380,"date":"2016-05-03T12:30:15","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T16:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=14380"},"modified":"2016-12-27T07:33:32","modified_gmt":"2016-12-27T12:33:32","slug":"at-long-last-ray-porter-is-home-and-continuing-on-the-road-to-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/at-long-last-ray-porter-is-home-and-continuing-on-the-road-to-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"At long last Ray Porter is home and continuing on the road to recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the comfort of the home he has lived in for 48 years, Ray Porter is taking it one day at a time and is getting better and better as each one passes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong> <broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Back in November, the community was devastated when news broke that Ray had suffered a stroke, which left him unable to speak and in a wheelchair for several months. He\u2019s come a long way since December when Huntsville Doppler caught up with him during his stay at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital.  Thanks to Ray\u2019s determination to be his old self again, he is making strides in his recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his stay in Huntsville Hospital, Ray was transferred to a hospital in North Bay to begin a long stretch of rehabilitation and then he spent the month of April at Country Moments Retirement Home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14387\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14387\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14387\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/05\/Ray-Porter-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ray sitting comfortably at home in his favourite chair.\" width=\"574\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/05\/Ray-Porter-1-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/05\/Ray-Porter-1.jpg 574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ray sitting comfortably at home in his favourite chair.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now his loving wife, Bev, who\u2019s been by her husband&#8217;s side every step of the way, is doing all that she can to keep him at home. Personal support workers and nurses come in and check on him, and once a week he undergoes speech therapy and will continue physiotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not much of a nurse,\u201d says Bev, adding that she was willing to give caregiving a try to have her husband home at last. \u201cHe always enjoys people visiting, going for a drive and he\u2019s been colouring a lot as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray is a well-known, not to mention well-liked, man who spent many years as Brunel Road\u2019s crossing guard for the high school students. Every year, Ray was Huntsville\u2019s own Santa Claus in the annual parade and was involved in many local charities as well.<\/p>\n<p>Close family friend Grant Nickalls, who refers to Ray as Uncle P, said seeing Ray walk down the hallway of his home is a testament to Ray\u2019s strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it was nice to see him sitting out on the step outside,\u201d said Grant. \u201cThere\u2019s still a long road ahead to his recovery, but I think it\u2019s very brave of her [Bev] trying to be doing it all.
