To register as an organ and\/or tissue donor, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mahc.ca\/beadonor\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.mahc.ca\/beadonor<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sheena\u2019s story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sheena Branigan has a genetic condition that ultimately leads to kidney failure. In fact, she is the fourth of her siblings to have received a pre-emptive (pre-dialysis) living donor kidney transplant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn October 29, 2021, my sister-in-law, in an act of selfless giving and strength, donated one of her kidneys to me; she now has one and I now have three! Life with a new filter is pretty awesome,\u201d explains Dr. Branigan. \u201cMy family is very grateful for our good fortune to live in a place with such excellent resources.&nbsp;I have discovered that not all people who could benefit from such a life changing intervention know about it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s quick to balance the \u201ctough ask\u201d with recognition that \u201cpeople do the most amazing things for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centre for Living Organ donation is at UHN. A high school friend was unwell with end-stage liver failure and a transplant was needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt couldn\u2019t hurt to see if I\u2019m a match,\u201d Makenzy thought. \u201cI\u2019m young, I\u2019m healthy. And I might be suitable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some ways, Makenzy\u2019s decision last June to donate part of her liver for her friend\u2019s transplant was that simple. The more complicated part, she felt, was explaining it to others. She often is met with the response, \u201cI couldn\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile today, eight months after the surgery, Makenzy counters with, \u201cI would still do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her liver has regenerated and her friend\u2019s labs have almost normalized to a new lease on life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTime is something we can\u2019t buy and I was able to give it,\u201d says Makenzy. \u201cWhen you see the difference you can make, this is something we can do. It\u2019s not as scary as some may think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Makenzy is proud to spread the word that organ donation can save up to eight lives, and many more through tissue donation. In death, she says, it gives meaning to an end where someone else can live on through a legacy of what an organ donor has given \u2014 the priceless gift of time, and in some cases, like her friend\u2019s \u2014 life altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s doing better and it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cierra\u2019s story<\/strong><br>Registered Practical Nurse Cierra Smyth has been open about her story of living donation, telling it to local media in December 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cierra\u2019s story highlights yet another avenue for organ donation through the Kidney Paired Donation program. Cierra\u2019s decision to donate her kidney to a stranger ultimately saved her friend from acute kidney failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember seeing it on Grey\u2019s Anatomy and thought that it would take a lot of work,\u201d she says. And it was. \u201cThe actual process is a big commitment to ensure you are healthy to be a donor, But it was all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Cierra says sometimes she forgets that she now has one kidney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a donor, it\u2019s not as big of a lifestyle change as people think compared to someone getting their life back,\u201d adding she has had minimal impacts nor lives with many restrictions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for her friend, the impact has been huge \u2013 moving forward new chapter in life and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the living kidney donation programs in Canada can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blood.ca\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.blood.ca<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charlotte\u2019s story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlotte Bastedo and Suzanne Fenn have worked side by side at the hospital for two decades. It was just like any other shift until Sue jokingly asked Charlotte, \u201cWant to donate your kidney to my brother in law?\u201d Sue and other family members had been unsuccessful to proceed through the process, but Charlotte quickly replied, \u201cWhy not? I have two.\u201d And from five simple words a course was set into action that would bring the nursing colleagues even closer together while also changing a life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following thorough investigation through screening, paperwork and rigorous testing, donor and recipient were determined to be a match and last November the pair was in the operating room only an hour apart from each other to facilitate the excision and the transplant.
