{"id":133198,"date":"2023-02-28T09:41:06","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T14:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/rwddev\/?p=133198"},"modified":"2023-02-28T12:34:24","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T17:34:24","slug":"huntsville-council-approves-a-6-56-per-cent-tax-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/huntsville-council-approves-a-6-56-per-cent-tax-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Huntsville council approves a 6.56 per cent tax increase"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At its February 27 meeting, Huntsville council passed a total budget levy of $19,408.056 which represents a tax increase of 6.56 per cent over last year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Huntsville portion of the property tax, the increase represents total taxation of about $428 per $100,000 of assessment for 2023, according to Huntsville Director of Financial Services\/Treasurer Julia McKenzie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, when you add the estimated District portion of the property tax in (currently sitting at a 4.12 per cent increase), and the education portion of the property tax (zero per cent), the 2023 impact on Huntsville residents will be a total property tax for general services of about&nbsp;$891 per $100,000 of assessment, according to McKenzie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huntsville saw a 5.02 per cent growth in assessment over the previous year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Town has been fortunate enough to receive funding support from the Province in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this has enabled the Town to bring forward budgets that have not had significant increases for Huntsville taxpayers. Surpluses during this time have primarily been the result of resource shortages, both from contractors and human capital. It is expected that moving forward, there will be a catch-up period and increased resources will be required to maintain service levels.
