{"id":13174,"date":"2016-04-18T05:59:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T09:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=13174"},"modified":"2016-04-18T08:28:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T12:28:39","slug":"jeff-allen-brings-home-gold-and-silver-medals-at-provincial-judo-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/jeff-allen-brings-home-gold-and-silver-medals-at-provincial-judo-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeff Allen brings home gold and silver medals at provincial judo tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another provincial championship, another dominating performance from Huntsville\u2019s Jeff Allen, who came home from the Peel Judo Championships on April 2 with multiple medals as he continues his meteoric rise in the Canadian judo scene.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong> <broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>With six wins in seven fights, Allen won gold in the 30-35 year-old Masters 100+ kg division, in which he is currently the defending Canadian champion and ranked eighth in the world, as well as a silver in the Seniors category, open to all fighters over the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a long day but it went well, there were some great fights,\u201d said Allen, who will now set his sights on one final provincial tournament \u2013 the Tora Annual Championships in Brampton on April 30 \u2013 before turning his attention to bringing home multiple medals from the national championships in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>Also competing in the event was Huntsville\u2019s Damian Saccary, who went with Allen and won bronze in the -81 kg division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to stay busy, stay training and fighting right before each competition,\u201d said Allen, who places a heavy emphasis on preparation and keeping healthy between tournaments. \u201cAt nationals I\u2019ll be fighting on two separate days, so you try to keep the fights as quick as possible and conserve your energy, plus there\u2019s less chance of getting hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he heads out West, Allen will also be facing a wider variety of fighters than in recent competitions, including squaring off against some <em>very<\/em> big men in the Senior category. Despite giving up several inches in height, or even several hundred pounds in weight, it\u2019s not a prospect that frightens the Huntsville judoka.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13735\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13735\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13735\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/mms_img-1176701806-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"Allen adds some new hardware to his rapidly-growing collection of judo medals and trophies\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/mms_img-1176701806-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2016\/04\/mms_img-1176701806.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Allen adds some new hardware to his rapidly-growing collection of judo medals and trophies<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt the 2013 National Championships there was a guy from Nunavut who was 450 pounds, just huge,\u201d recalls Allen. \u201cThere was a guy from last year who was six-foot-ten. I don\u2019t feel intimidated by it in any way, I\u2019ve fought big guys before and beat them. It just means you need to prepare for a bigger range of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Being able to compete at such a high level and enter tournaments across the country \u2013 even around the world \u2013 is an opportunity Allen acknowledges wouldn\u2019t even be possible without the support of the Huntsville community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t say enough thanks to all the local sponsors for helping me out,&#8221; says the Huntsville dad. &#8220;Hidden Valley Resort, Pickett Contracting, Ward Edmunds, they\u2019re all a huge help to me, as well as all my other smaller sponsors, I can\u2019t thank them enough. If you don\u2019t have the sponsorship it would be almost impossible to go out and compete in all of these events, because it\u2019s so expensive. Flights, hotels, food, all adds up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m passionate about judo, and I\u2019m serious about doing well, so I can accept that,&#8221; adds Allen. &#8220;But it\u2019s tough at the same time, and I&#8217;m grateful for all the help and support I&#8217;ve received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Liked this story?
