Wind chill values are expected to reach -35\u00b0C to -40\u00b0C tonight into Friday morning and again Friday night into Saturday morning.\u00a0\u00a0After moderating during the day Friday, wind chills are again forecast to reach\u00a0-35\u00b0C to -40\u00b0C\u00a0Friday night into Saturday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reminds the public that very cold temperatures can put everyone at risk for cold-related conditions or injury, such as frostbite and hypothermia. Health risks are greatest for those who are marginally housed or homeless, outdoor workers and sports enthusiasts, older adults, infants and children, and persons with preexisting medical conditions such as heart or lung disease. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of cold-related conditions when heading outdoors during periods of extreme cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the\u00a0weather conditions before going outdoors and prepare yourself and those in your care. Consider\u00a0<a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shortening<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>outdoor play for children when temperatures are between -20\u00b0C to -25\u00b0C (with or without wind chill) and keep children indoors if temperatures reach or drop below -27\u00b0C (with or without wind chill). More advice about winter safety for your children can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/caringforkids.cps.ca\/handouts\/safety-and-injury-prevention\/winter_safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Caring for Kids<\/span><\/a>, developed by the Canadian Paediatric Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take care to dress for the cold\u00a0by\u00a0wearing layers that include an inner layer, middle layer and a wind-resistant outer layer. Wear\u00a0a hat, gloves and scarf to\u00a0protect\u00a0exposed skin, and remember that it is still important to protect your skin from UV rays, so wear\u00a0sunglasses on sunny days, lip balm and sunscreen as it will also help to keep your skin moisturized to prevent windburn. Take\u00a0regular breaks from the cold, in warm locations whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When spending time outside, watch for signs of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simcoemuskokahealth.org\/Topics\/HealthyEnvironments\/Outdoor-environment\/Extreme-temperature\/Cold#d56e29b4-5ca1-4e71-9195-c913e82bb5ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">frostbite<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and hypothermia.\u00a0Frostbite can happen when skin is exposed to the cold. Signs include skin that is white or grayish-yellow in colour, is unusually firm or waxy and cold to the touch, or has the sensation of pins and needles followed by numbness. If you suspect that you or someone else has frostbite, move to a warm location and remove wet clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simcoemuskokahealth.org\/Topics\/HealthyEnvironments\/Outdoor-environment\/Extreme-temperature\/Cold#40a8cfd0-e93c-4cb6-83ff-8d95455dde1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hypothermia<\/a>&nbsp;occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can make it, leading to a core body temperature that is too low for the body to properly function.
