IS IT A SIN TO TELL A LIE\u2014IN BRIDGE?<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s important to communicate with your partner in a consistent and accurate manner. As the saying goes, \u201ca good partner is one whose hand, when laid down as dummy, somewhat resembles the hand partner bid.\u201d But sometimes the best way to describe your hand means that you have to \u201cgasp\u201d – tell a little fib!<\/p>\n Take the case of a strong hand with a long Heart suit. You don\u2019t have quite enough to open with a strong Two-Club bid so you bid one Heart. After partner has responded, but not supported Hearts, you know that somewhere you have enough for game. A jump in Hearts will just be invitational; partner could pass! You don\u2019t want to leap to game because you are not sure of the Hearts, and after all, it\u2019s possible that further exploration would reveal that you have a slam.<\/p>\n This is where the lying comes in. To show the strength of your hand, you must bid a strong jump shift, but you don\u2019t have a second suit. You do have three small Spades to the queen. It\u2019s tempting to make your jump in Spades. But suppose partner really likes Spades and merrily goes ahead and bids a game. Aagh! Wouldn\u2019t it be better to make your jump shift bid in Diamonds. So, you only have two Diamonds! It is less likely that partner will get carried away in Diamonds.<\/p>\n The moral of this story is that if you have to lie, it\u2019s better to lie in a minor. Sometimes, it\u2019s not really a sin to tell a lie in bridge.
