{"id":114969,"date":"2022-06-22T14:05:11","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T18:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=114969"},"modified":"2022-06-22T14:05:13","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T18:05:13","slug":"its-time-for-canada-to-recognize-taiwan-as-an-independent-country-aitchison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/its-time-for-canada-to-recognize-taiwan-as-an-independent-country-aitchison\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s time for Canada to recognize Taiwan as an independent country: Aitchison"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release on June 21, Muskoka-Parry Sound Member of Parliament Scott Aitchison called on Canada to officially recognize Taiwan as an independent country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aitchison, who is running for the leadership of the Conservative Pary of Canada, stated that if he were elected and become Prime Minister, he would officially establish diplomatic relations to advance peace and prosperity throughout Asia-Pacific, and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under his mandate, he also said Canada would renew its commitment to its regional partners in an effort to \u2018strengthen the defence of freedom, democracy and shared values,\u2019 stated his media release.<br><br>\u201cTaiwan is an independent and sovereign country, a beacon of openness, democracy, respect for human rights, and a case study in the benefits of a market-based economy open to trading with the world,\u201d he stated. \u201cIt is time for Canada to finally recognize this reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the release, under Canada\u2019s One China policy, the Canadian Government does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state and does not maintain official, government-to-government relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the better part of 50 years, Canada\u2019s and Western foreign policy was premised on the basis that increased trade and prosperity with China would lead to greater adherence to human rights and liberalization of communism\u2019s harsh edges,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aitchison said if elected, he would work with Canada\u2019s allies and trade partners to welcome Taiwan into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and support the country\u2019s efforts to join U.N. specialized agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), obtain observer status at INTERPOL (international police), and the U.N.
