{"id":109940,"date":"2022-03-08T17:01:41","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T22:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=109940"},"modified":"2022-03-10T08:43:42","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T13:43:42","slug":"glover-thanks-public-works-crews-for-their-efforts-during-wild-weather-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/glover-thanks-public-works-crews-for-their-efforts-during-wild-weather-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Glover thanks public works crews for their efforts during &#8216;wild&#8217; weather event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the March 8 Lake of Bays Council meeting, Mayor Terry Glover asked superintendent of public works Steve Peace for an update on the latest storm event which impacted the area.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted council and the public to be well aware of the fact that this storm event we had with the freezing rain over the roads, and our trucks with chains on it and how severe that actually was,\u201d he said. \u201cAs I understand it, this is the worst storm anyone can remember in 40 years and that on top of the frozen culvert situation \u2013 it\u2019s been very exciting, and we sure appreciate what you\u2019ve done\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peace referred to the storm event which started on Tuesday, February 22, as unprecedented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spoken to some long-term Township employees, and past employees, and nobody has seen conditions like that in their time here.\u201d Peace said there is one Township employee who is approaching 47 years with the municipality \u201cand he hasn\u2019t seen conditions like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said rain, then freezing rain as temperatures drastically dropped overnight, created solid layers of extremely hard ice. \u201cThe tire chains on our equipment weren\u2019t even making a mark in that ice, in some locations,\u201d added Peace. \u201cWe did what we could, and we thank the public and residents of Lake of Bays for bearing with us while we struggled through and got things done. We\u2019re making some changes moving forward so we can attack this if it happens again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glover said councillors heard from many residents who had problems with mobility, some cars and trailers jack-knifed on the ice, Township trucks could not get through and a culvert also froze. \u201cIt was pretty wild so thank you very much to our roads crew for being out there and doing their best with what we\u2019ve got, and we sure appreciate everything you\u2019ve done so thank you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the Town of Huntsville and District of Muskoka declared <a href=\"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/district-town-declare-significant-weather-event-in-huntsville-due-to-freezing-rain\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a significant weather event<\/span><\/a> as crews tried to address treacherous icy road conditions.
