Local resident Janet McCormack is doing her part to set some kindness in motion during the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believe in doing things to help other people out and with COVID it feels like people might need a little nudge to remember the Christmas spirit,&#8221; she says. &#8220;In the holiday season it&#8217;s fun to think of others and what you can do to help make people happy and feel special.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, she created a &#8216;kindness tree&#8217;\u2014a Christmas tree decorated with small bags containing kindness challenges that children can complete\u2014and placed it in the driveway of her home and office at 14 Florence Street E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kindness challenges &#8220;range from making a thank you note for the garbage and recycling staff, to leaving little paper hearts around the house to remind their family they love them, to secretly doing a chore for someone and watching how they react, to writing or drawing a love letter to their parent,&#8221; explains McCormack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;All of the challenges are small and easy to do but have the ability to make the kids feel pretty special for the contribution they will make to their family or community.&nbsp;We tell kids that it is better to give then to receive but then often don&#8217;t give them the opportunity to give.&nbsp;In my experience working with kids, they love the feeling of watching someone react to their kindness gestures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/12\/20211207_081303-e1638913767159-1024x928.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106406\" width=\"334\" height=\"368\"\/><figcaption>The kindness tree at 14 Florence St. E (Dawn Huddlestone)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The bags also include a small toy\u2014some water beads\u2014that the children can play with after they&#8217;ve completed their challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, McCormack, who works with children with autism and other learning needs, also placed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/this-little-free-library-is-just-for-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a little free library just for kids<\/a><\/span> in her front yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes that with this new initiative, &#8220;a child would feel the magic of Christmas as they come to a tree decorated with lights and bags and feel excited to take one.&nbsp;Then have the wonder of what their kindness challenge will be and end with the excitement of planning it and completing their mission,&#8221; she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Christmas is for kids and I just wanted to find another way besides the library on the front yard to help kids make some special memories.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Don\u2019t miss out on Doppler!<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Sign up <a href=\"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/dont-miss-out-on-doppler\/\"><u>here<\/u><\/a> to receive our email digest with links to our most recent stories.<br \/>\nLocal news in your inbox so you don&#8217;t miss anything!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"background: #5cb85c url('https:\/\/d1iczxrky3cnb2.cloudfront.net\/red_logo.png') no-repeat 37px; color: #fff; text-decoration: none; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; display: inline-block; font-size: 16px; padding: 15px 38px; padding-left: 75px; -webkit-border-radius: 2px; -moz-border-radius: 2px; border-radius: 2px; box-shadow: 0 1px 0 0 #1f5a89; text-shadow: 0 1px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.3);\" href=\"https:\/\/donorbox.org\/support-huntsville-doppler\">Click here to support local news<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45657\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acts of kindness tend to have a ripple effect.
