<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although special ballots are still being counted across the country, including in Parry Sound-Muskoka, a minority Liberal government has been projected based on election-day and advance votes and the MP-elect in many ridings has been declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Parry Sound-Muskoka, 233 of 234 polling stations have reported, but special ballots are still being counted according to Elections Canada. Even still, incumbent Conservative candidate Scott Aitchison received a large enough share of the votes to be declared the MP-elect for this riding.<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Here’s how the numbers in Parry Sound-Muskoka for this election compare to previous years. (Note that the 2021 numbers may change slightly as counting of ballots is finalized.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voter turnout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

60.87 per cent (52,249 of 85,831 registered electors, not including those who registered on election day) of eligible voters cast ballots. This was higher than the national average but down from the 66 per cent turnout in PSM in 2019 (55,055 of 83,362 registered electors).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nationally, the 2021 election had the second lowest turnout in Canada’s election history (preliminary data indicates just under 59 per cent), with only the 2008 election lower, at 58.8 per cent. The 2008 election was also a snap election, called by Conservative PM Stephen Harper, during a recession. In 2019, 67 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Share of votes by party <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the Conservatives and NDP made gains in Parry Sound-Muskoka this election (up 7.6 per cent and 5.3 per cent respectively), while the Liberals and Greens lost a significant share of the vote compared to 2019 (down 8.9 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively). In 2019, the People’s Party of Canada candidate for Parry Sound-Muskoka withdrew prior to the election and was not replaced on the ballot by another candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservatives: 47.7 per cent (24,928) vs. 40.1 per cent in 2019 (22,845)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liberals: 21.5 per cent (11,233) vs. 30.4 per cent in 2019 (16,615)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NDP: 17 per cent (8,858) vs. 11.7 per cent in 2019 (6,417)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People’s Party: 7.7 per cent (4,026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green: 5.6 per cent (2,909) vs. 15.4 per cent in 2019 (8,409)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parry Sound-Muskoka’s voting history<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This riding has traditionally voted Conservative, electing a Liberal MP in just six elections over the past 75 years (1949, 1953, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004). In the 2008 election, Liberal Andy Mitchell, who had held the seat since 1993, was narrowly defeated by Conservative Tony Clement. Mitchell lost by just 0.1 per cent or 28 votes (18,485 votes to Clement’s 18,513).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
