{"id":102440,"date":"2021-09-01T12:31:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T16:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=102440"},"modified":"2021-09-01T13:35:52","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T17:35:52","slug":"team-birthday-brothers-gathering-hair-donations-for-cancer-charities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/team-birthday-brothers-gathering-hair-donations-for-cancer-charities\/","title":{"rendered":"Team Birthday Brothers gathering hair, donations for cancer charities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last few years, brothers Wolfgang and Atticus Kuehnen, aged 11 and 8, have raised thousands of dollars for the Terry Fox Foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year they&#8217;ve added a fun twist to their fundraising effort: collecting hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When Wolfgang was in junior kindergarten at Huntsville Public School and learned about Terry Fox, he asked his dad Jason to take him to the annual run in town. Instead of using his spending money on a t-shirt, he donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in school we learned about kids that did great things and I was like &#8216;woah&#8217; and felt inspired. I realized I could do something too in order to make a difference,\u201d said Wolfgang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His interest in Terry grew from there and it rubbed off on his younger brother Atticus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years later the brothers, who were both born in August, hosted a birthday party and asked family and friends to donate to the foundation. They were able to deliver $200 to that year\u2019s run.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, the boys had to devise a COVID-safe way to host their party and still raise money for the cause.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair decided to host a Ride for Hope birthday party at the Lions Lookout track. They invited friends and family and did laps of the track on their bikes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boys\u2019 mom, Marcia, contacted local Terry Fox Run coordinator Sharon Stahls to help with the event. Stahls brought decorations and books, and made goodie bags for the kids.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was a huge success and the boys surpassed their goal of $500, raising $2,000. They were featured on the Terry Fox Foundation website and received hats, plaques, and thank you letters signed by Fox\u2019s family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year they decided to also ask for hair donations to be made into wigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boys hadn\u2019t had a haircut in two years and decided to be the first ones to donate their locks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-740x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-630x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-740x1024.jpg 740w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-768x1063.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-1110x1536.jpg 1110w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-1480x2048.jpg 1480w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-scaled.jpg 750w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/09\/unnamed-2-630x872.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So far they have nine confirmed hair donations and almost $2,000 in monetary donations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always said to my boys their whole lives that I just want to be one thing and that is kind. I am so proud of them,\u201d said Marcia. \u201cIt\u2019s unusual for children of this age to be thinking beyond their own gain so it\u2019s been amazing to see the awareness they have that they can make a difference.
