{"id":101595,"date":"2021-08-10T09:23:37","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T13:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=101595"},"modified":"2021-08-10T09:23:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T13:23:38","slug":"young-local-rider-raising-funds-to-fight-kids-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/young-local-rider-raising-funds-to-fight-kids-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Young local rider raising funds to fight kids&#8217; cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huntsville Public School student, Braunwyn Strickland, is riding to fight kids&#8217; cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She began the Great Cycle Challenge on August 1 with the goal of raising $2,500 as she rides a total of 300km.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Strickland was inspired to register for the Great Cycle Challenge by her teacher, Madame Boulard. \u201cShe has been cancer-free for six years and because I am a kid, I thought riding to support kids&#8217; cancer research was important. Also, I love to ride both on mountain bike trails and roads, it&#8217;s fun and it&#8217;s great training,\u201d said Strickland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strickland kicked off her fundraising by donating $50 of her own money, which her parents matched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then she began reaching out to people she knows, asking for their support. \u201cI was looking for 50 people to pledge $50 each so that I could hit my fundraising target of $2,500.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Strickland\u2019s sponsors, Jamie Watkinson, has pledged $1.00 per kilometre and has paid the $300 upfront. \u201cI&#8217;m hoping to ride more than 300 kilometres, just for him,\u201d said Strickland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of August 10, she has ridden 114km and raised $1,673, just over 65 per cent of her target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants of the GCC can invite other riders to join them for a group ride through the fundraising platform. Recently, Strickland proposed a group ride in Port Sydney, and fellow GCC rider, Elizabeth Stokes, joined her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals or businesses interested in supporting Strickland&#8217;s journey to raise money for kids\u2019 cancer research can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/greatcyclechallenge.ca\/Riders\/BraunwynStrickland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">greatcyclechallenge.ca\/riders\/braunwynstrickland<\/span><\/a>.
