{"id":100478,"date":"2021-08-07T05:53:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-07T09:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=100478"},"modified":"2021-07-23T15:20:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T19:20:26","slug":"saturday-streetscapes-goodwin-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/saturday-streetscapes-goodwin-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Streetscapes: Goodwin Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Michael Walmsley<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Goodwin Drive winds E-W from Greaves Avenue and S-N to Northdown Street<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norman Goodwin presided over Huntsville as its mayor from 1970 until 1978.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Goodwin\u2019s terms of office coincided with Ontario\u2019s introduction of regional government which presented many major restructuring challenges for towns such as Huntsville.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His former role as the reeve of Brunel would have, no doubt, provided him with some important tools and experiences that enabled Goodwin to navigate his \u201csmall-fish\u201d town in the \u201clarge-lake\u201d parameters of regional affairs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, the province eliminated local police forces and had towns establish Ontario Provincial Police attachments within their boundaries.&nbsp;Then there were the challenges associated with local hospital funding, local day-care support, senior living accommodations, and the huge task of setting up a District arm of local government including the selection of a Regional Chair.&nbsp;Debates concerning these issues seemed to overwhelm some towns, but Norm Goodwin\u2019s leadership moved Huntsville through these turbulent times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/07\/Former-Huntsville-mayor-Norman-Goodwin.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100480\" width=\"350\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/07\/Former-Huntsville-mayor-Norman-Goodwin-350x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/07\/Former-Huntsville-mayor-Norman-Goodwin.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption>Former Huntsville mayor Norman Goodwin (huntsville.ca)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, Mayor Goodwin successfully navigated the sometimes-rough waters of that regional government \u201clake\u201d and had Huntsville emerge as a \u201cgrowing fish\u201d.
