SUMMARY:The Mother and The Bear - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:After 26-year-old Sumi suffers an accident on the streets of wintry Winnipeg\, her overbearing mother Sara flies in from Seoul to be by her now comatose daughter’s side. As Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app\, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. \nIn a departure from his previous films\, Chinese Canadian filmmaker Johnny Ma embraces a new mode here\, using suburban Winnipeg as the stage for a stylized\, whimsical narrative of crossed wires\, secret lives\, and conflicting agendas. A unique mash-up of genres\, The Mother and the Bear marks a bold new direction for Ma. And if you were wondering about that eponymous bear… well\, you’ll just have to see the film. \nCanada\, Chile | 2024 | 100m | English\, Korean\nDirector: Johnny MaCast: Kim Ho-jung\, Won-Jae Lee\, Jonathan KimDistributor: Elevation Content Advisory: mature themes\, nudity

SUMMARY:Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) – A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:TIFF Canada Top Ten\, 2025 | Winner\, Best Canadian Feature Film Award\, TIFF ’25A strange death\, village upheavals\, swarming suitors and supernatural forces lead to a love story gone awry in acclaimed Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk’s latest enthralling imagining of ancient Inuit stories. \nCelebrated Inuk director Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner) returns a captivating\, epic\, historical drama about an arranged marriage\, set 4\,000 years ago. Seamlessly blending the supernatural with verité realism\, the film follows a boy\, Sapa\, and a girl\, Kaujak\, whose union in marriage is promised by their families from birth. With arresting imagery\, his trademark humour\, and a cast of mostly non-professional actors\, Kunuk has again created a world that not only builds upon Inuit stories and legends to enthrall audiences but works to preserve these reimagined stories for generations to come. Born from oral traditions\, and committed to authenticity\, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is a unique feat of both cultural conservation and engrossing cinema. \nCanada | 2025 | 100m | Inuktitut with English subtitlesDirector: Zacharias KunukCast: Haiden Angutimarik\, Theresia Kappianaq\, Leah PanimeraDistributed by: Isuma

Smitten\, WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy to a space cruise ship which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier. Ultimately WALL-E\, EVE and some malfunctioning robots have to find a way to retrieve the plant and save the earth.

SUMMARY:Hamnet - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Winner\, People’s Choice Award\, TIFF 2025 | Nominated for 8  Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, Best Director\, and Best Actress | Winner\, Golden Globes Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Lead Actress\, Motion Picture – Drama \nFrom Academy Award winning writer/director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland)\, Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece\, Hamlet. \nIn William Shakespeare’s day\, the names Hamlet and Hamnet were interchangeable. Director Chloe Zhao uses that context as the basis for a tender exploration of Shakespeare’s domestic life\, connecting a family tragedy to one of his most famous works. Maybe we can better understand Hamlet\, Zhao suggests\, if we consider that it was developed while the most famous writer in the Western canon was mourning the death of his 11-year-old son\, Hamnet. \nBased on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell\, Hamnet’s main character isn’t The Bard — played here by an impressive Paul Mescal — or even the child who gives the film its name. Hamnet belongs to Agnes\, Shakespeare’s thoughtful wife\, played by an enthralling Jessie Buckley\, who bathes the film in her warmth. \nGrief is a theme here\, but Hamnet is not just a film about death. Early scenes of Agnes and William’s courtship are naturalistic\, rendered through lush cinematography. Like any family story\, this one contains joy alongside sorrow.

SUMMARY:Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Lilith Fair changed everything. Upon its emergence in 1997\, this revolutionary travelling music festival\, helmed by superstar Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan and featuring exclusively women or women-led acts\, exploded the notion that popular music could only support a token quota of women’s voices. \nThis galvanizing documentary from director Ally Pankiw chronicles Lilith Fair’s triumphant three-year run and features new interviews with key performers such as Jewel\, Bonnie Raitt\, Erykah Badu\, and Emmylou Harris. \nWith beautifully integrated performances\, backstage footage\, and media coverage\, Pankiw explores the logistics and challenges in making these events happen. She also highlights the festival’s significance to younger up-and-coming artists through interviews with Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo. There’s also testimony from actor-filmmaker Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek)\, a producer of the film\, who caught his first Fair as a boy and was forever affected. The legacy of Lilith Fair lives on\, and this inspiring film tells us why. \n

SUMMARY:Sentimental Value - A Reel Alternatives Film
DESCRIPTION:Grand Prix winner\, Cannes (2025) A record eight Golden Globe (2026) nominations (Best Drama\, Director\, Screenplay\, plus acting nods for Renate Reinsve\, Stellan Skarsgård\, Elle Fanning\, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas)  \nIn Sentimental Value\, Joachim Trier returns with a poignant\, darkly comic portrait of fractured family ties and artistic ambition. A fading film director (Stellan Skarsgård) disrupts the lives of his estranged daughters when he returns to their childhood home with plans to shoot a deeply personal biopic. As old wounds resurface\, Nora (Renate Reinsve)\, a celebrated actress battling anxiety\, and Agnes\, a steady but scarred mother\, must confront the legacy of abandonment\, art\, and emotional manipulation. \nThe charismatic Gustav offers his daughter Nora\, a gifted but troubled stage actress\,  a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. SUMMARY:Jane Austen Wrecked My Life - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:In her utterly charming debut\, writer-director Laura Piani draws from Jane Austen’s works while crafting a wholly contemporary romantic comedy that stands on its own merits.\n\nAs a clerk in the legendary British bookshop in Paris\, Shakespeare & Co\, Agathe (Camille Rutherford) loves her job. But there are faint stirrings of discontentment when she realizes how long she has been surrounded by stories of others’ desires and adventures instead of chasing her own. Perpetually single\, she hopes to find a romance like those in the novels of her favourite author\, Jane Austen\, in which love triangles\, ardent admirers\, and reckless unrequited crushes abound. Supported by her encouraging — and conspicuously rakish — best friend Felix (Pablo Pauly)\, Agathe leaves for a Jane Austen writing residency. Upon arrival\, she meets a distant relation of the author\, the handsome — and haughty — Oliver Lowe (Charlie Anson). Between the writing obligations\, realizing that she may miss Felix\, and constantly running into the intriguing Mr. Lowe\, Agathe’s life has taken a stressful\, yet strangely familiar\, turn…. \nFrance | 2024 | 94m | French (with English subtitles) and EnglishDirector: Laura PianiCast & Crew – Camille Rutherford\, Pablo Pauly. SUMMARY:So Surreal: Behind The Masks - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Part detective story and part illuminating history\, Behind the Masks is a must-see for anyone who loves art\, culture\, and entertaining docs. \nSo Surreal: Behind the Masks unveils the fascinating connection between the work of famed European Surrealist artists and Yupʼik and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw ceremonial masks\, and the quest to bring some of the masks back home. Using illustration and engaging storytelling\, director\, Neil Diamond (not the singer) tells how Indigenous masks left their homelands through trade and sale but also through theft. \nWith dreamy Surrealist imagery interspersed with Yup’ik dancers in masks\, interviews with current-day carvers and art experts\, and one particularly arresting scene in the Louvre with Yup’ik artist\, storyteller\, and dancer Chuna McIntyre\, this doc masterfully weaves together the threads of cultural and artistic histories. \nCanada | 2024 | 88m | English\nDirectors: Neil Diamond\, Joanne Robertson\nCast: Neil Diamond\, Bill Cranmer\, Juanita Johnston
