Walker Lake Home Offers Tranquility and Community
If you are one who enjoys the quieter side of life and loves scenic views, the Wearing-Parrott Team has a new listing which could be just what you are looking for. Sandra Parrott was the Realtor® for the current owners when they originally purchased this lovely property on Walker Lake, and now we have been asked to sell their home for them, some 14 years later.
Recently, we spoke with Burr Atkinson, one of the owners of the waterfront home at 1001 Walker Lane, which is located along the pristine and peaceful shores of Walker Lake. We want to share his views on why this has been such a wonderful place to live, so you too can get the feel for this amazing property.
First, you may wonder if living on Walker Lake is so special, why do the owners want to sell? In 2002, Burr moved here with his family, including his mother, his wife, Heather McLean, and their five-year-old daughter, Hope. No longer a little girl; Burr & Heather’s daughter is off for her second year of studies at Western University in London, Ontario, where Burr was a professor. As a close knit family, Burr and Heather are moving to be near family.
Family is one of the main reasons they originally decided to move to the Muskoka region, and in particular, to Walker Lake. As Burr explains it, “Everyone is very close. There is an association made up of people who want to keep the lake pristine and clean. The community is warm, welcoming, and helpful. When we first moved here, members of the community reached out to us …we really felt welcome and part of the community.”
Walker Lake is a nice size lake, with homes mostly along the waterfront, and includes a small resort, The Norseman, which offers great nights out for dinner. As a motor-restricted lake, the community is one that prefers the natural environment, and has many local artists living there. In fact, the area along the Limberlost Road where Walker Lake is located is well known for the local artisans who live and participate in regional in-studio tours each year. If you have a creative side, this home on Walker Lake could be the ideal place for you.
One way that this community of home owners has made a strong connection is through the famous “Walker Lake Barges”. Each home has its own barge, and as Burr describes it, “A Walker Lake Barge is like a large deck with a motor. There is a railing, seats, patio chairs, and space for a grill. We often motor around the lake and visit with friends. The barges are made so that multiple ones can pull up next to each other, and you can socialize with friends, swim, and barbeque. This is unique to the area, and made possible because of the calm water.” Of special note, the Walker Lake barge is included in the sale of this property, although whoever is the lucky buyer of this peaceful property will need to provide their own motor.
The Atkinson / McLean family is also part of the neighborhood association, which meets regularly to ensure the preservation of Walker Lake. The association also puts on annual events such as holiday parties and barbeques. Burr states that, “The association is a great way for people to get together, socialize, and work on common interests.” Walker Lake makes an ideal location for those who enjoy time out-of-doors, surrounded by nature. Since Walker Lake is situated between Huntsville and Dwight, Algonquin Park is nearby, as is The Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve. Outdoor recreational opportunities also include golfing at Deerhurst or the Grandview Mark O’Meara course, and winter fun at Hidden Valley Ski Area.
This lovely home itself offers comfort and plenty of space for everyone. At approximately 2,400 square feet, this split-level home has an open design of the living space with a cozy woodstove and deck access. There is a well-appointed kitchen, with pine floors and a central island. On the upper level there are three bedrooms including a master bedroom with its own deck and three piece ensuite bath.
This listing on Walker Lake is ideally situated for anyone seeking easy access to water recreation year-round. With the private shoreline located off a gently sloping path, the lake provides swimming in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and fishing throughout the year. It was the views of the lake which really drew the Atkinson/ McLean family to the home to begin with. Wanting to enjoy evening sunsets from their private deck, and experience the beauty of all four seasons in a tranquil setting, made this home just the place to be.
If you are looking for an artist /hobby studio or office space, look no further than 1001 Walker Lane. Soon after moving in, Burr had a heated two-car garage built on the premises. This was more than just a garage, however, as a wonderful work space was included in the new addition. With plenty of windows providing great natural light, this is perfect as a writer’s or artist’s studio. There is even a bunkie area above for extra guests. Listed for sale at $625,000, this lakefront property offers all the tranquility and space you will need to enjoy the Muskoka life.
