March 12, 2024: A Stakeholder Relations Advisor from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) has informed the Township of Lake of Bays that repairs for the closed section of Highway 35 are estimated to take 2-3 days. The cause of the washout is not confirmed and is currently under investigation. The entrances onto Highway 35 from Highway 60 and Highway 117 continue to be restricted for use by local traffic only.

The Township of Lake of Bays advises that a section of Highway 35 remains closed due to a substantial washout, resulting in significant damage to the road infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), the closure is in effect from Birkendale Road to Seabreeze Road.

Additionally, the MTO has implemented traffic control measures at the entrances to the highway at Highway 60 and Highway 117, limiting access to local traffic. The Township advises motorists that, at this time, the only available detour is to proceed around Lake of Bays using Highway 117, Brunel Road, South Portage Road, and Highway 60 to reach their destination.

According to the work crews onsite, they’re hoping the highway will be restored by tomorrow afternoon, or earlier.

What was the cause? I notice further south beavers trying to plug a culvert.

    Hello Faye,
Thank you for your comment. As per the Township of Lake of Bays this morning, the road has reopened to all traffic.

Rather a confusing and slightly misleading headline.

Perhaps it should add “for local traffic only” as it is clearly not open as a through road yet!
