It is common knowledge that quitting smoking is good for your health. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in Canada. But quitting is also good for your bank account. For a pack-a-day smoker who quits, that translates into about $3,500 per year in savings. Also, insurance costs may be lower if you are a non-smoker.
How to stop a nosebleed? Sit upright and slightly forward to avoid swallowing or aspirating blood. Pinch the nose below the bridge of the nose for 10-15 minutes. If that doesn’t stop it, try a decongestant nose spray which constricts the blood vessels in the nose. Don’t stuff the nostril with tissues or gauze. Pulling it out may start the bleeding again. If the bleed lasts for more than 30 minutes, seek medical help.
Most people are aware that drinking alcohol during pregnancy is a no-no. But for non-pregnant people, even drinking a glass or two of wine daily could be a problem.
What happens when one drinks alcohol? The body breaks it down to a toxic compound, acetaldehyde. This is a carcinogenic chemical that can have an effect on DNA. When the DNA of a cell is damaged, it can start dividing at an accelerated rate and might create a cancerous tumour. The immune system can usually handle things like this but if the amount of alcohol being consumed is large (for example daily), the chances of cancer occurring increases.
