Muskoka residents invited to provide input on province’s regional government review

In a media release issued today, the Ontario government invited residents of Muskoka and seven other regions governed by an upper-tier municipality—Halton, York, Durham, Waterloo, Niagara, Peel, and Oxford County—to provide “local input on how to improve governance, decision-making and service delivery for regional governments and member municipalities.” The province launched an online consultation portal today where people can submit comments until April 23, 2019.

“We promised the people of Ontario that all levels of government would work harder, smarter and more efficiently,” said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in the release. “Our government is putting people first by seeking local input on how to improve governance, decision-making and service delivery for regional governments and their member municipalities.”

Feedback received will be assessed by special advisors Michael Fenn and Ken Seiling, along with information gathered in meetings with municipalities and stakeholder groups. Fenn and Seiling were appointed by Clark in January and will provide their advice and recommendations to the Minister this summer.

In his message on the consultation page, Clark notes that, “The outcomes of the review are not predetermined. It is about making sure regional and municipal governments are accountable to the people and working hard to deliver services to their communities. By building on what’s working well, we can improve regional government and make it easier to access local services. Only after we have thoroughly considered the advisors’ recommendations will we determine how to proceed.”

The survey includes 16 questions, most related to governance, decision-making, and service delivery.

You can complete the online survey here until April 23, 2019. The ministry says it will report back on feedback it received in the fall of 2019.

We need the train from Huntsville to Toronto back. The bus does not make it easy for older people. The train is faster to get from one place to other. A lot of people feel trapped here in Huntsville.
