Girlfriends Getaway Weekend, now in its 11th year, has become a signature fall event for Huntsville. Downtown storefronts are adorned in pink, and laughter abounds as women enjoy a variety of activities, shows and shopping.
Some of the events are already sold out: headliner Sass Jordan, locally produced show The Vagina Monologues the Country Legends Tribute Tour and a cooking demonstration with local chef Jeff Suddaby. But there are plenty of other ways for ladies to find fun this weekend.
Perhaps one of the most unique is the Firefighter Femmes Adventure by Find Your Wild. Don firefighting gear and overcome obstacles, play a grown-up game of hide-and-seek or try out a new kind of “escape room”. Find Your Wild also offers the chance to overcome a series of wilderness obstacles the Backcountry Bush Challenge. Both are at the Morgan’s House Bed and Breakfast property east of Huntsville and just a short drive from host resort Deerhurst.
Or the girls can get creative with artist and quilting workshops. The Huntsville Art Society and More Than Just Art present the Artist Workshop Series with five different ways to play: “paint” a landscape in wool at Watercolour with Wool Workshop with Pam Carnochan, revisit a childhood love of finger painting at the No Brushes Allowed Acrylic Workshop with Linda Harti, connect with your spirit at the Drumming Workshop with Barry (Bazza) Hayward, turn doodles into something beautiful at the Zentangle Workshop with Gill Young, and discover the amazing properties of alcohol inks at the Fluid Inks on Tiles Workshop with Marv Wastle. Or create a quilted landscape in a full-day workshop with Terri Howell and Mary Spring, no sewing experience required!
If the kitchen is where you like to create and entertain, add some new recipes to your repertoire at two Queens and Cuisine workshops. At Let’s Get Saucy, learn how to make delicious sauces like Bechamel, and Hollandaise, a variety of soups and stocks, and Glace de volaille and Demi Glace reductions. Or join the Pasta Making Class to make your own traditional pasta and tomato-based sauce with sausage. Both are at the community room at Bullock’s Independent. Or just enjoy a delicious dinner at the Hostess with the Mostess Saturday night buffet with chef to stars like Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, Mike Ward.
Get inspired and informed at Girl Talk a series of workshops on beauty, health, relationships, and fashion at the Algonquin Theatre.
And then there’s the shopping. Huntsville’s Main Street and beyond offers a unique range of wares.
Or check out the Think Pink silent auction at Deerhurst Resort in support of Huntsville Hospital’s breast cancer
services. “What could be more appropriate than choosing this insanely popular women’s weekend to
support an important service for local women?” says Amal Daou, Deerhurst’s Director of
Conference & Special Events.
