Each autumn for the last three years, Faith Baptist Church members have gone the extra mile to bring a little joy to people in the Huntsville community.

Every year, members of the church volunteer to brighten workplaces, schools and homes. Whether it be assisting at a school breakfast club or bringing homemade baked goods and coffee to people working outside in the cold, the “i Heart Huntsville” team is there to put a smile on everyone’s face.

“In this third year of running ‘i Heart’, we have 115 volunteers signed up to serve in 19 different tasks around our Huntsville community,” said campaign leader, Matt Kerr. “Although the campaign is just spread over a few weeks, we hope that the serving hearts and actions continue beyond these weeks into the whole year.”

Church members of all ages were eager to help brighten the days of community members all around town. From kindergarten-aged to retired, they arrived with coffee or tools on hand and ready to help out.

“This year I was able to include my kids in ‘i Heart Huntsville’,” said Christine Tulloch, who has been part of the initiative since its launch. “They helped bake, pick up the coffee, and drop off the goodies off at Pine Glen. After it was done, it was so rewarding to hear my son say, ‘Mom! Let’s do this for Pine Glen AND Huntsville Public next year!’”

Each year the team comes up with new good deeds to add to their campaign such as visiting cemetery workers with homemade pies or doing light building maintenance at Christine’s Place Pregnancy Support Centre.

“This year we even did yard work at the homes of seniors and at the hospice,” said Dave Hiscox, i Heart Huntsville co-ordinator. “Despite a rainy Saturday, our people were happy and enjoyed raking leaves in the rain. In fact, we had one recipient call into the church to say they couldn’t believe we showed up to work in the rain and were having so much fun doing it.”

Next year the team hopes to reach even more locations with an even bigger group of volunteers.

“While many members have volunteered every year,” said Tulloch, “the most amazing part is that our team keeps on growing so we always have more and more people wanting to help.”
