SUMMARY:The Mother and The Bear - A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:After 26-year-old Sumi suffers an accident on the streets of wintry Winnipeg\, her overbearing mother Sara flies in from Seoul to be by her now comatose daughter’s side. As Sara meddles in Sumi’s life via a dating app\, she ends up on a journey that will leave her forever changed. \nIn a departure from his previous films\, Chinese Canadian filmmaker Johnny Ma embraces a new mode here\, using suburban Winnipeg as the stage for a stylized\, whimsical narrative of crossed wires\, secret lives\, and conflicting agendas. A unique mash-up of genres\, The Mother and the Bear marks a bold new direction for Ma. And if you were wondering about that eponymous bear… well\, you’ll just have to see the film. \nCanada\, Chile | 2024 | 100m | English\, Korean\nDirector: Johnny MaCast: Kim Ho-jung\, Won-Jae Lee\, Jonathan KimDistributor: Elevation Content Advisory: mature themes\, nudity

SUMMARY:Hannah & Nathan Album Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:You may already know Hannah Shira Naiman — from a square dance she called at a local hall\, a community singing circle\, or a children’s music camp where she handed a kid their first taste of traditional song. She lives here. She has been quietly\, steadily building something in this community for years. And on May 21\, 2026\, at Trinity United Church\, she marks a pivotal new chapter in her artistic life: the release of Love & Labour\, her debut collaborative album with renowned Ontario fiddler and singer\, Nathan Smith. This is Hannah stepping fully into a new professional project — and launching it right here\, in front of the community that knows her best. The evening also features fellow Muskoka musicians Todd & Robyn as opening act. \nAbout the Album\nLove & Labour\, set for release on May 15th\, is born from an unexpected moment: late one rainy night on a dark Northern Ontario highway\, a serious collision left Hannah and Nathan shaken but unscathed. Remarkably\, the two went on to perform a full weekend of shows\, dances\, and workshops. On the drive home\, the decision was made — it was time to make a record together. \nThe result is eleven tracks weaving original songs\, fiddle/banjo tunes\, contemporary covers\, and traditional repertoire\, unified by acoustic instrumentation and close\, parallel harmonies rooted in Appalachian and old-time music. Notably\, the final track of the album\, “Younger Days” is an emotional tribute to one of Huntsville’s beloved youths\, and Hannah’s former co-worker\, Blake Quinlan.

SUMMARY:Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) – A Reel Alternatives Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:TIFF Canada Top Ten\, 2025 | Winner\, Best Canadian Feature Film Award\, TIFF ’25A strange death\, village upheavals\, swarming suitors and supernatural forces lead to a love story gone awry in acclaimed Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk’s latest enthralling imagining of ancient Inuit stories. \nCelebrated Inuk director Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner) returns a captivating\, epic\, historical drama about an arranged marriage\, set 4\,000 years ago. Seamlessly blending the supernatural with verité realism\, the film follows a boy\, Sapa\, and a girl\, Kaujak\, whose union in marriage is promised by their families from birth. With arresting imagery\, his trademark humour\, and a cast of mostly non-professional actors\, Kunuk has again created a world that not only builds upon Inuit stories and legends to enthrall audiences but works to preserve these reimagined stories for generations to come. Born from oral traditions\, and committed to authenticity\, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is a unique feat of both cultural conservation and engrossing cinema. \nCanada | 2025 | 100m | Inuktitut with English subtitlesDirector: Zacharias KunukCast: Haiden Angutimarik\, Theresia Kappianaq\, Leah PanimeraDistributed by: Isuma

SUMMARY:WALL-E: A Student Robotics Team Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:100% of Reel Alternatives ticket sale proceeds and film sponsorship dollars raised and will be donated to the student team.  \nReel Alternatives is proud to sponsor a special matinee of WALL-E in support of the Huntsville High School Championship Robotics Team — Hoya Robotics. The film for this event was chosen by the students and it’s not only ideally appropriate for the cause but also as appealing\, funny\, heartwarming and relevant as it was when it won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film in 2009. \nBring the whole family for an inspiring afternoon at the movies while helping some of the brightest young minds in the world design\, build and compete with their next championship robot right here in Huntsville. This team punches way above their weight on the world stage but they need to raise an annual budget of $60\,000 to do so. \nWhether you purchase tickets\, add a donation at the door or sign on as a film sponsor\, you’ll be helping to fuel innovation\, teamwork\, and the future of STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics) right here in our community. \nAbout the film: \nWALL-E is the last robot left on Earth. He spends his days tidying up the planet\, one piece of garbage at a time. He has amassed quite a collection of things including the last living plant.on earth. WALL-E is more than a little lonely until he spots EVE\, a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten\, WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy to a space cruise ship which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier. Ultimately WALL-E\, EVE and some malfunctioning robots have to find a way to retrieve the plant and save the earth.

SUMMARY:Muskoka Concert Band’s Spring Performance “Picture This!”
DESCRIPTION:This spring we will be performing a special program titled “Picture This! – Music that tells us stories” at two great concerts in Muskoka. On Saturday\, April 25th at 2:00 pm we will be performing our one-hour free spring concert sponsored by the Bracebridge Library (your donations\, as always\, are gratefully accepted) and on Sunday\, April 26th at 2:00 pm we will do a full program at Trinity United Church in Huntsville (admission $20 at the door\, children 12 and under free.) \n“Picture This!” is a program of music that tells us stories of different places\, times and people. You will hear the story of the Lewis and Clark exploration of the Louisiana Territory depicted in Philip Sparke’s exciting work\, The Pioneers\, a quick visit to the Big Top with From Tropic to Tropic\, the gorgeous depiction of cottage life through Canadian composer Vern Kennedy’s Chandler Point Suite\, and even a vision of a Renaissance soiree with Madrigalum. \nNo MCB program would be complete without some traditional music that holds stories for many of us and Canadian Danny Wilks’ rich version of Danny Boy fits that bill with just a bit of a jazz chord twist. For the music theater lovers\, we have some of the music of the stories we love to watch with Broadway Showstoppers Overture and A Chorus Line. And to punctuate the stories of Muskoka’s own history we thought you’d enjoy some big band music in the form of Count Basie Salute.

SUMMARY:The third annual TLDSB Arts Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Trillium Lakelands District School Board staff\, parents/guardians\, and students are invited to celebrate student art at the third annual Arts Showcase\, taking place in each region of the Board. \nEarlier this year\, students were challenged to select an expressive medium of visual or performative arts and work individually or collaboratively in a pair\, small group\, or whole class to create a piece of art. A broad collection of these pieces will be selected to be on display at the region showcases. \nSee the list of dates and locations below: \nCity of Kawartha Lakes\nDate: Thursday\, April 9\nTime: 6 – 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: I.E.
