Environment Canada issues a snow squall watch

Issued at 06:29 Thursday 17 November 2022

Conditions are favourable for a prolonged period of significant lake effect snow squalls off of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay tonight through this weekend. Extremely dangerous travel is expected within these snow squalls.

Hazards:
Local snowfall accumulations of 30 to 60 cm by Sunday. Higher amounts are possible in the most persistent lake effect snow bands.
Visibilities may be reduced to near zero in heavy snow and local blowing snow.

Timing:
Tonight through Sunday.

Discussion:
Snows squalls are expected to intensify tonight and persist through the weekend. Westerly winds will become southwesterly on Saturday. As a result, snow squalls are expected to target the Bruce Peninsula and the Parry Sound vicinity on Saturday.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Road closures are possible.
