Chair of planning committee thanks developer for “keeping the peepers whole”

The sound of spring peepers became the focus of attention during a rezoning application brought to Huntsville’s Planning Committee on September 13.

The applicant, Vista Investments Muskoka Inc., is proposing to change the zoning of an estimated 3.1 hectare property at 58 Stephenson Road 12 West from Rural Residential to a Rural Special Industrial Zone, which would permit a contractor’s establishment, garden centre, heavy equipment sales and service, self-storage facility, service establishment, transportation depot and warehouse.

Larry Ross, President of Vista Investments Inc., said as part of the process he sent a letter to all adjoining property owners informing them of what is being proposed on the lands. He said he received a phone call from the neighbour to the west of the property proposed for rezoning,

“He wasn’t concerned about the zoning. The only concern he had was the location of a future driveway. There’s a small pond on the property, very small, and he wanted to make sure that we didn’t put the driveway through the pond,” said Ross. “He said he enjoyed the spring peepers, so I went out and I mapped out the location of the driveway, he then walked it and he called me and said ‘that’s great.’”

No further concerns were raised at the meeting. “Thank you for keeping the peepers whole. I love peepers,” said committee chair Nancy Alcock.

Committee approved the rezoning application, which will make its way to council for final ratification. Staff indicated proper buffering will be addressed as part of site plan control.
