You often hear the phrase ‘creeping Alzheimer’s’ said in a joking manner when someone forgets where they put their keys or can’t remember why they went into a room. But joking aside, what are the warning signs of Alzheimer’s? Here are some of the symptoms:
Memory loss affecting day-to-day abilities … forgetting things often or struggling to retain new information.
Difficulty performing familiar tasks: forgetting how to do something you’ve been doing your whole life.
Problems with language: forgetting words or substituting words that don’t fit the context.
Disorientation in time and place: not knowing what day of the week it is or getting lost in a familiar place.
Impaired judgment: not recognizing when a medical problem needs attention or wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather.
Misplacing things: putting things in strange places, like an iron in the freezer.
Changes in mood and behaviour: behaving out of character such as feeling paranoid or threatened.
Loss of initiative; losing interests in friends, families and favourite activities.
