On August 29th, 2024, a special celebration was held at Santa’s Village, Bracebridge, to recognize 17-year-old Paralympian Mary Jibb, who is competing at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
A large group of family and friends gathered with their bright red Canada Paralympic T-shirts to show their love and support to Mary. She is the daughter of Sgt. Darcy Jibb, OPP Bracebridge and her mother, Jennifer Jibb.
Born in Bracebridge, Mary joined the Canadian Paralympic swimming team after striving for ten years to attain this honoured position for Canada.
Specializing in the backstroke, she will be competing in four swimming events. Mary, also is skilled in freestyle and the butterfly being one of twenty other Canadian swimmers participating.
As a young child of five years old, Mary had suffered a stroke, which affected her right side, resulting in swimming as physiotherapy to combat her disability.
Having joined the Muskoka Aquatic Club, ten years ago, she received intensive training under the guidance of Coach Heather Lee, who has travelled to France to watch her highly talented protege. It was noted that Mary’s love for swimming and her determination for success, were key as she became a world class athlete.
At Santa’s Village, many well-wishers were in attendance Thursday night for a special “Best wishes and Good Luck” ceremony with a Cry by the Bracebridge Town Crier Bruce Kruger and assisted by Jolly Ole St. Nicholas himself, along with the Crier’s Escort Lynn Kruger and Mrs. Claus.
This was followed by special comments of support and congratulations by His Worship, Mayor Rick Maloney. Mary’s father, Darcy, expressed his outmost gratitude on behalf of Mary and her family, for the extreme support of the community.
In addition to the many participating in this special shoutout for Mary, were members of the Bracebridge Fire Department, District of Muskoka EMS and OPP. Many of Santa’s elves and management at the Village, all added to this special tribute to Mary.
